Cheney shoots 72, Pioneers 301 at Kiawah Island Invitational

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. --- Tusculum's Warren Cheney carded an even par 72 and is tied for 22nd place following the opening round of the 2013 Kiawah Island Invitational. The two-day, 36-hole tournament is being held at Cougar Point Golf Club and is being hosted by USC Aiken.

The Pioneers posted a team score of 301 and is in 14th place in a field that includes five nationally-ranked NCAA Division II programs.

No. 20 Armstrong posted an 11-under par team score of 277 and has a five shot lead over sixth-ranked USC Aiken and 11th-ranked North Alabama at 282. Mount Olive and Flagler are tied for fourth place with 284, while No. 16 Georgia College is in sixth place with 286.

Erskine is seventh with 291, followed by Coker (293), Saint Leo (294), Limestone (295), Newberry (296), Carson-Newman (297), King (299), Tusculum, Georgia Southwestern (304), 21st-ranked Belmont Abbey (305) and North Georgia (313).

Flagler's Spencer Schindler and Coker's Chris Fuga each carded at 67 (-5) and are tied for the first-day lead.

Tusculum senior Dakota Norton shot 74 and is tied for 40th place, while junior Coleman Glick is tied for 51st with a round of 76. Sophomore Nick Forsberg posted a 79 and is in 70th, while junior Leif Ratliff tallied an 82 and is tied for 82nd.

The final round will be played on Tuesday.
