SALISBURY, N.C. --- The Tusculum College men's golf team maintained its position and finished eighth at the 2011 Richard Rendleman Invitational, held this week at the Country Club of Salisbury.
The Pioneers posted 300-302=602 to finish in the middle of the pack in the 17-team tournament field. UNC Pembroke won the team title with 292-289=581 to win by six shots over second place Belmont Abbey. UNCP was paced by Jordan Walor as he captured playoff honors by posting a par on the first playoff hole to defeat Carson-Newman's Gavin Hay. Walor and Hay each posted three-under par scores of 139.
Queens University of Charlotte finished third with 589, while Lincoln Memorial and Newberry tied for fourth place with 594. Carson-Newman finished sixth with 597, while host Catawba placed seventh with 599. Tusculum was eighth with 602, followed by Findlay (603), Lenoir-Rhyne (606), Pfeiffer (608), Grand Valley State (615), Wingate (618), Limestone (620), North Greenville (637), King (637) and Mars Hill (652).
Tusculum's Nick York fired back-to-back rounds of 74 to finish with 148, good enough to tie for 14th place. Derek Cantrell shot 76-73=149 to tie for 19th place, while David Talley posted 75-78=153 to finish 37th. Justin Harvey tallied another round of 77 to finish 42nd with 154, while Luke Fullen placed 51st with 75-81=156. Lawson George finished 63rd with 79-81=160 playing as an individual competitor.
The Pioneers return home to host the Tusculum Invitational this weekend at Link Hills Country Club. The opening round will be held Monday morning and admission is free to the public.
