MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. --- Tusculum College's Chase
Carroll shot an opening round 77 and is tied for 71st
place after day one of the 2009 NCAA Division II Men's Golf
Southeast/South Super Regional. The three-day, 54-hole tournament
is being held at the par 72, 7,126-yard Robert Trent Jones Golf
Trail at the Shoals.
Carroll, a senior from Knoxville, Tenn., is 10 shots behind first
round leader Chris Goldan of Lynn University, who fired a
five-under par 67.
Carroll opened with a steady with an even par 36 at the turn as he
scored pared his first nine holes. But a pair of bogey fives on the
10th and 11th holes, coupled with a double-bogey five on the par
three 13th and another bogey on No. 14 pushed the South Atlantic
Conference Player of the Year to five-over par. The three-time
All-SAC performer gathered his emotions, to shoot even par for the
final four holes.
This marks the third straight year Carroll has qualified as an
individual competitor for the NCAA II Super Regional.
The second round will be played on Tuesday, followed by Wednesday
final 18 holes. The event is being held in Muscle Shoals, Ala.,
hosted by the University of North Alabama.
