ETOWAH, N.C. --- South Atlantic Conference Men's Golf Player of the Year and Tusculum College senior Chase Carroll fired a two-round total of 69+71=140 on the opening day of the 2009 Food Lion SAC Tournament to take a two-shot lead into the final round tomorrow at the Etowah Country Club and Golf Resort.
Tusculum is in fifth place with a two-round total of 297+301=598, 12 shots back of Carson-Newman College's tournament leading total of 293+293=586. Host Brevard College is one shot behind at 293+294=587 and Newberry College is third at 291+298=589. Wingate University is fourth at 293+299=602, followed by Tusculum, Mars Hill College (298+305=603), Lincoln Memorial University (298+306=604), Lenoir-Rhyne University (307+305=612), and Catawba College (302+314=616).
Carroll holds a two-shot advantage over Mars Hill's Josh Spradling, who fired a two-under par 71-71=142. Lawson George (75+76=151) and Darren Christie (76+75=151) of Tusculum are tied for 21st place. Jake Scheffers is tied for 36th with a two-round total of 77+81=158 and Houston White is in 39th at 81+79=160.
The final round of the 54-hole championship will be held Tuesday morning at the par 72, 6,796-yard layout.
