ROCK HILL, S.C. --- Tusculum University guard Trenton Gibson was honored as the 2020 recipient of the South Atlantic Conference Elite 20 Award for men's basketball. The award was presented at last weekend's SAC Championship in Greenville, South Carolina.
The SAC Elite 20 Award honors the student-athlete with the top cumulative grade-point average (based on a minimum of 48 credit hours) in each of the league's 20 team championship sports.
Gibson, a sophomore from Murfreesboro, Tennessee, has a 3.939 GPA while majoring in sports management. He was named to the NCAA Division II Academic All-District first team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). He is a nominee for the CoSIDA Academic All-America® team, which will be announced later this week.
He is a member of the SAC Commissioner's Honor Roll, Athletic Director's Honor Roll, Dean's List, President's List and Charles Oliver Gray Honors List.
On the court, Gibson averaged 13.5 points per game and earned a spot on the All-South Atlantic Conference honorable mention squad. He led TU in assists with 3.9 helpers per contest and was third on the roster in rebounding, pulling down 5.9 boards per game. The 2019 SAC Freshman of the Year has accounted for 814 points, 352 rebounds and 229 assists in his 61-game career at Tusculum so far.
Tusculum finished the season with a 19-13 overall record, a three-win improvement from last year and finished fourth in the league standings for a second straight year. TU advanced to the semifinal round of the SAC Tournament for the first time since 2011. The 19 victories are tied for the fifth-most in school history.
