CHARLOTTE, N.C. --- Queens University placed
all five starters in double figures and shot nearly 58 percent from
the field as the 13th-ranked Royals defeated Tusculum College 91-71
in a South Atlantic Conference men's basketball game Saturday
afternoon at the Levine Center.
Rob Lewis scored a game-high 21 points for the Royals (14-1,
8-1 SAC), who outscored the Pioneers 58-20 in the paint and shot
18-for-27 from the field in the second half as a team.
The Pioneers (7-8, 3-7 SAC) put four players in double
figures, led by Darius Carter who finished with 15 points. Javon
Price added 11 points off the bench for Tusculum, while Chase
Mounce and Kendall Patterson netted 10 points apiece.
Daniel Camps had 16 points, a game-high nine rebounds and five
assists for the Royals, who fell behind 7-3 early before using an
8-0 run to take the lead for good. Queens led 48-29 at halftime and
by as many as 23 points late in the second half, finishing the game
at 57.6 percent (38-for-66) from the field.
Tusculum went ahead 7-3 on a three-pointer by Zach Davis just
under four minutes into the game, but the Pioneers would more than
eight minutes until their next field goal as the Royals ran out to
a 22-11 lead with 8:19 left in the first half.
The Royals' lead ballooned to 48-29 at halftime as Lewis led
the way with eight points. Sean Morgan added eight points while
Camps, Marquis Rankin and Todd Withers each had seven points in the
opening 20 minutes. Davis led the Pioneers with seven points and
five rebounds in the first half, but Tusculum shot 29.6 percent
(8-for-27) from the field and 10-for-19 at the foul line.
A three-pointer by Price helped the Pioneers cut the Royals'
lead to 66-55 with 9:51 remaining, but the Royals scored the next
nine points on baskets by Camps, Kendall Jones and Withers along
with a three-point play by Morgan to go ahead 75-55 with 7:31
left.
Morgan finished the game with 13 points and five rebounds for
the Royals, with Rankin tallying 13 points and Withers 11 to go
along with five rebounds. Jared Hendryx was a factor in the post
for Queens with eight points, six rebounds and four blocked shots
in 20 minutes off the bench.
Mounce led the Pioneers with eight rebounds to go along with
his 10 points, while Patterson dished out five assists and grabbed
four rebounds. Davis had six rebounds to go along with nine points,
as did Cory Fagan who hit a pair of three-pointers and finished
with six points.
Matt Shown returned to action for the Pioneers after missing
Wednesday's game due to injury, and had eight points and six
rebounds in 26 minutes. Shown also hit his first career
three-pointer just before the final buzzer.
The Pioneers will face their second straight ranked opponent
when they visit 16th-ranked Lincoln Memorial University on Thursday
at 8 p.m. from Tex Turner Arena in Harrogate.
