Balanced team effort paces Pioneers to 85-58 win over Anderson

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Tusculum got a balanced team effort as 11 players worked their way into the scoring column in the Pioneers 85-58 South Atlantic Conference victory over Anderson University Tuesday night at Pioneer Arena.

With the victory, Tusculum (5-2, 2-1 SAC) remains undefeated at home while snapping an 11-game losing streak to Anderson (2-6, 1-2 SAC). It was TC's first win over the Trojans since Dec. 19, 2007 in the inaugural meeting between the two programs.

Senior Darius Carter led the charge with 14 points and four assists as he shot 4-of-7 from the floor, including 3-of-4 from three-point land and 3-of-5 from the free throw stripe.

Junior center Chase Mounce recorded his 12th double-double of his career with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Junior Zach Davis contributed a solid 12 points and eight rebounds off the bench, while freshman Zach Hartle added a season-high 10 markers with four rebounds. Junior guard Kendall Patterson posted nine points and four assists, while junior Cory Fagan finished with seven and three boards.

Also getting into the TC scoring ledger were Matt Shown (6), Javon Price (5), Johnathan Knight (4), Gunnar Beamer (3) and redshirt freshman Malik Tyree (2) who recorded his first collegiate points on Tuesday.

Anderson was led in scoring by Lex Davis' 12 points, while Maurice Howard added 11 points, three assists and three steals.

Defensively, the Pioneers limited Anderson to 33.9 percent shooting, including 7-of-24 in the first half (29.2%). Anderson's Randall Shaw, the conference's leading scorer (21.4 ppg) was limited to six points on the evening, while SAC's top rebounder Rakish Taylor (10.6 rpg) was held to only three rebounds on the night.

With Tusculum ahead 21-18 with 10 minutes left in the opening half, the Pioneers went on a 16-4 run en route to a 39-24 advantage at the intermission.

The Pioneers maintained its double-digits lead throughout the remainder of the game and extended their advantage to as many as 76-45 with 6:23 left on the clock.

TC finished the game shooting 47.5 percent from the floor, including 13-of-24 in the second half (54.2%). Tusculum shot 20-of-25 from the free throw line for 80 percent, including Davis' 10-of-12 performance at the stripe.

Tusculum dominated the glass, out-rebounding the Trojans 49-30, including 11-7 on the offensive boards resulting into 13 second-chance points.

The Pioneers return to action next Monday as they host nationally-ranked King University for a 7 p.m. contest at Pioneer Arena. TC will be looking to avenge last month's 93-82 loss to the Tornado in Bristol.
