Darius Moose poured home a game-high 33 points and Dominique
Pickett added 30 points to lead Brevard College to a 101-90 victory
over Tusculum College in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball
action Wednesday night at Boshamer Gymnasium.
Miles Leathers added 20 points and five assists for the Tornados
(3-8, 3-4 SAC), who shot 65.4 percent (34-for-52) and went 8-for-17
from three-point range to finish off a sweep of the season series
from the Pioneers (1-12, 0-7 SAC).
Four players reached double figures for the Pioneers, led by 16
points from Darius Carter and 14 points from Addison Flynn. Keith
Jumper added 13 points and eight rebounds and Neal Spinks had 12
points and eight boards for the Pioneers, who trailed 47-37 at
halftime and could get no closer than nine points after the
Tornados built a 16-point lead.
Moose went 10-for-15 from the field and 12-for-18 at the foul line
and grabbed a game-high 18 rebounds for Brevard, while Pickett hit
five three-pointers and went 10-for-16 from the field in the game.
Leathers connected on seven of his nine field-goal attempts and hit
5-for-6 at the foul line, part of a 25-for-35 performance by the
Tornados in the game.
Brevard used a 10-2 run to turn an 11-11 tie into a 21-13 lead with
12:15 left in the first half. The Tornados led by as many as 12
points at 46-34 following a Moose jumper with 1:45 to play, and led
47-37 at the half as Moose paced all players with 17 points and
seven rebounds. Pickett added 12 points in the first half for
Brevard, while Flynn, Spinks and BJ Fisher each had six points for
the Pioneers.
The Tornados shot 65.4 percent (17-for-26) from the field in the
half, including 4-for-9 from three-point range, while the Pioneers
connected on 12-for-27 field-goal attempts (44.4 percent) and also
went 4-for-9 from beyond the arc.
Tusculum trailed 55-44 with 18:04 left, but battled back to cut the
deficit to 63-59 on a layup by Carter with 12:17 to play. However,
Leathers scored seven straight points to restore the Tornados'
double-digit lead, which grew to 87-71 on a layup by Harrison White
with 5:35 remaining. Tusculum was able to whittle the spread to
nine points on four different occasions, but Brevard put the game
away by going 5-for-8 at the line in the final 1:20.
Flynn went 4-for-9 from three-point range and had team highs of
five assists and three steals for the Pioneers, while Jumper was
perfect on all four of his field-goal attempts and grabbed six of
his eight rebounds on the defensive end.
Jalen Walker finished with nine points and four assists in 22
minutes off the bench for the Pioneers, while Zach Davis had seven
points and six boards. In all, Tusculum's bench outscored Brevard's
reserves by a 30-4 margin, and the Pioneers managed a slim 34-33
advantage on the boards over the Tornados.
Tusculum returns to action on Saturday at 6 p.m. at Lenoir-Rhyne in
a SaC matchup from Shuford Memorial Gymnasium.
