--- King University closed out the game with a 14-1 run in the
final six minutes en route to an 85-66 non-conference win at
Tusculum College Wednesday night in men's basketball action from
Pioneer Arena.
C.J. Good led the Tornado (4-5) with 22 points off the bench
shooting 6-of-8 from three-point territory as King canned 14 treys
on the night, including nine in the first 20 minutes as the
visitors led 43-35 at halftime.
The Tusculum guard tandem of Darius Carter and Addison Flynn
tallied 16 points each, while rookie Cory Fagan scored a
season-high 12 markers in the loss for the Pioneers (1-9).
Flynn opened the second half with a three-pointer to trim the
deficit to 43-38, but KU answered with five points in a row,
including Drew Sandifer's three-point play with 17:47 left on the
clock. TC's Neal Spinks answered with a layup on the ensuing
possession, only to see King respond with an 8-1 spurt to lead
56-41 with 15:33 remaining. That run included two free throws from
Shamarae Watts and back-to-back three-pointers from Logan Lyle and
Hunter LeVeau as the Tornado were out to their largest lead at that
point of the contest.
Tusculum fired back with an 8-0 run, including a pair of treys from
Fagan and two free throws by Carter as the Pioneers trailed 56-49
at the 14:14 mark of the period. King bumped its advantage back to
a dozen (63-51) following a 7-2 run that was aided by a
three-pointer from Good and buckets from Brandon Crompton and
Watts. The Tornado would maintain a double-digit advantage for the
next seven minutes and led 71-57 with 7:41 left in the game.
Tusculum accounted for another 8-0 spurt that included a fast-break
dunk by freshman Zach Davis and capped off by two Carter free
throws as the Pioneers trailed 71-65 with 6:16 remaining.
Tusculum would go on a scoring drought for the next 5:30 while King
scored 14 unanswered points as Good accounted for seven markers
during the KU run. Davis' dunk with 7:14 left proved to be
Tusculum's final field goal of the night as the Pioneers would miss
their final eight attempts from the floor.
KU's Michael Fortune shot 5-for-7 from the field, including a pair
of 3-pointers for his 14 points, while Lyle tallied 11 points and
six rebounds. Watts finished with eight points and a game-high nine
rebounds, while Sandifer contributed seven points in the
victory.
Davis, Keith Jumper and Jalen Walker tallied six points each, while
Spinks posted four markers for the home team. Davis pulled down
five rebounds, while Carter also contributed five boards, five
assists and three steals.
King shot 50.9 percent from the field, including 12-of-21 (57.1%)
in the second half. KU also shot 14-of-33 from beyond the arc
(42.4%) and 15-of-16 at the free throw line (93.8%).
Tusculum shot 33 percent from the field, while connecting on seven
of its 22 three-point attempt (31.8%). TC also shot 25-of-36 from
the free throw line (69.4%), including 16-of-20 in the first half
(80%).
Tusculum returns to South Atlantic Conference play this Saturday as
the Pioneers travel to Salisbury, N.C. to face Catawba College for
a 4 p.m. contest at Goodman Gym.
