Jarrett Stokes scored a game-high 33 points and Queens
University shot 57.8 percent from the field in an 83-63 win over
Tusculum College in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball
action Saturday night in Curry Arena.
Brent Evans had 13 points and 11 rebounds for the Royals (3-4, 2-2
SAC), who connected on 26 of their 45 field-goal attempts,
including 7-for-12 from three-point range, while holding the
Pioneers (1-8, 0-5 SAC) to 35.8 percent (24-for-67) from the field
in the game.
Jalen Walker returned to action for the Pioneers after missing two
games and finished with 17 points and six rebounds, while Darius
Carter added 15 points and three steals. Addison Flynn tallied 12
points and Neal Spinks also reached double figures with 11 points
to go with four rebounds.
Stokes went 5-for-8 from three-point range and was a perfect
12-for-12 at the foul line for Queens, and along with Evans was
joined in double figures by Josh Clyburn, who had 15 points, seven
rebounds and seven blocked shots. As a team, the Royals had 12
blocked shots in the game.
The teams were tied 15-15 near the midpoint of the first half, but
Queens went on a 10-0 run to take a 25-15 lead on a layup by Joby
Glymph with 7:07 left in the half. A Stokes three-pointer with just
over two minutes left in the half gave the Royals their largest
lead of the half at 40-25, which they carried to the locker
room.
Stokes piled up 18 points, six rebounds and three steals in the
first half for the Royals, while Walker paced the Pioneers with 11
points. Queens shot 56.5 percent (13-for-23) from the field in the
half while Tusculum was successful on just 10 of its 32 attempts
(31.3 percent).
Queens built its lead to 17 points at 52-35 following a three-point
play by Clyburn early in the second half, but Tusculum answered
with an 11-2 run to pull within 54-46 on a layup by Spinks with
12:27 remaining. The Royals came back with a 13-2 run of its own to
go up 67-48 on two free throws by Jared Hendryx with 9:09
remaining, only to see the Pioneers rattle off 11 unanswered points
to cut the deficit to 67-59 with 6:24 to play.
However, Queens would have the final run of the night as it
outscored Tusculum 16-4 over the final 5 1/2 minutes. The Royals
went 13-for-16 from the free-throw line in the second half and were
perfect on four three-point attempts, including three from
Stokes.
Keith Jumper led the Pioneers with seven rebounds and added six
points and four steals in 29 minutes. As a team, Tusculum was
outrebounded 44-33 by Queens but forced the Royals into 22
turnovers while committing just 12 miscues of its own.
The Pioneers will be back in action Wednesday night when they host
King University in a non-conference game. Tipoff at Pioneer Arena
is scheduled for 7:00.
