
--- Newberry's Demarkus Smith scored 19 points to lead five
players in double figures as the undefeated Wolves posted a 96-80
South Atlantic Conference win at Tusculum Saturday afternoon at
Pioneer Arena.
Newberry (6-0, 4-0 SAC) knocked down 14 three-pointers on 39
attempts as six different players recorded a trey. The Wolves
forced 20 turnovers on 17 steals, resulting into 20 points. Eleven
of those steals came in the first half, resulting into 13 Newberry
points as the Wolves jumped out to a 24-6 lead seven minutes into
the contest.
Cole Birchfield tallied 18 points, including four three-pointers,
while Dondray Walker added 17 points while shooting 4-for-5 from
beyond the arc. Xavier Holmes added 13 markers, shooting 6-for-7
from the field while grabbing eight rebounds. Gerald Evans
contributed a dozen points while dishing out seven assists and
recorded four steals.
Tusculum sophomore Keith Jumper led all players with his
double-double of 22 points and 12 rebounds. Jumper shot 8-of-10
from the floor, as his first six field goals came via the slam
dunk. Darius Carter added 15 points, five rebounds and four
assists, while Addison Flynn finished with 12 points and four
helpers.
During the 24-6 run the start the game, Walker paced the Wolves
with eight points, including a pair of three-pointers. Newberry
bumped the lead out to as many as 22 (38-16) before the Pioneers
responded with a 16-4 spurt to trim the deficit to 44-33 with 1:51
left in the half following a pair of Flynn free throws.
Newberry closed out the final 1:20 with a 5-1 run that included a
Walker three and a steal and layup from Evans in the final seconds
in the half to take a 51-36 lead into the locker room.
In the second half, Newberry took its largest lead of the afternoon
at 73-49 with 13:57 remaining following a 6-0 spurt that included a
Jamie Harper three-pointer. Tusculum closed the gap 15 points late
in the game, but that would be as close as the Pioneers would
get.
TC's Neal Spinks and Chase Mounce accounted for seven points each,
while rookies Cory Fagan and Zach Davis added six points apiece.
Tusculum out-rebounded the Wolves by a 42-38 margin and out-scored
Newberry in the paint, 34-28. The Wolves won the battle of the
bench scoring (31-21), while shooting 43.9 percent from the floor
and 24-for-33 from the free throw stripe (72.7%), including
19-of-25 in the opening half (76%).
TC shot a dismal 36 percent in the opening half, but bounced back
in the second period making 14-of-27 (51.9%) to finish the game at
43.6 percent. TC also shot 29-of-44 from the charity stripe
(65.9%).
Tusculum returns to action next Saturday to take on SAC newcomer
Queens University of Charlotte.
