Darius Carter scored a career-high 26 points and Addison Flynn added 23 points as Tusculum College outscored Trevecca Nazarene University 110-106 in the opening game of the Carson-Newman Classic Friday afternoon at Holt Fieldhouse.

Jalen Walker contributed 17 points and eight assists and Keith Jumper tallied 13 points off the bench for the Pioneers (1-2), who reached the 100-point mark for the first time since a 100-92 win over Wingate on Jan. 7, 2006. The 110 points were the most for Tusculum since a 116-101 victory against Wingate on Feb. 5, 2005.

As a team, the Pioneers shot 58.3 percent (35-for-60) from the field and 32-for-46 from the foul line in the game. The teams combined for 65 fouls and 94 free-throw attempts in the contest, which saw two players from each team foul out. Byron Sanford led the Trojans (1-2) with a game-high 27 points along with nine rebounds and eight assists, while David Woodard contributed 20 points and eight rebounds off the bench.

The Pioneers took their largest lead of the game at 72-53 following two free throws by Carter with 17:29 remaining, only to see the Trojans go on a 32-11 run to snatch an 85-83 lead on a basket by Jordan Miles with 9:30 to go. However, Flynn hit back-to-back three-pointers sandwiched around a Trojan basket to restore the Tusculum lead for good at 89-87 with 8:26 left.

Walker came through for the Pioneers down the stretch, hitting a pair of layups in the final 2 1/2 minutes to respond to Trojan baskets. The sophomore salted away the win by hitting a free throw with just over a second left to set the final score. Walker, who played 33 minutes, went 7-for-9 at the foul line and had three steals and five rebounds in addition to his team-high eight assists.

Carter broke his previous career high of 23 points set in his collegiate debut against Mount Olive on Nov. 11, 2011 by going 6-for-9 from the field and setting career highs at the foul line of 14 makes and 16 attempts, all while playing just 20 minutes. Flynn was 5-for-6 from beyond the arc and 7-for-9 overall, and also had five assists before fouling out with 1:33 to play. Jumper saw his first extended action of the season for the Pioneers and went 6-for-7 from the field to finish with 13 points, while making a career-high four steals in 24 minutes off the bench.

As a team, the Pioneers received 40 points on 15-for-23 shooting from bench players in the victory and scored 23 fast-break points as a team. Tusculum also converted 17 Trevecca Nazarene turnovers into 26 points while committing just 10 turnovers of its own.

The Pioneers jumped to a quick 5-0 lead on a layup by Carter and the first of Flynn's five three-pointers, but the Trojans came back to tie the score at 12-12 on two free throws by Sanford with 4 1/2 minutes gone in the first half. Tusculum built its lead to double figures at 34-22 thanks to a 12-4 run, capped by a three-pointer from freshman Cory Fagan with 9:43 left in the half.

Two free throws by Walker built the Pioneer lead to 17 points at 45-28 with 7:28 on the clock, and Tusculum went to the locker room with a 62-48 advantage as Flynn led the way with 13 points and Jumper added nine. The Pioneers' 62 points were the most in a half since scoring 62 in the second half at Carson-Newman on Feb. 16, 2005. Tusculum shot 62.5 percent (20-for-32) from the field in the first half, while Trevecca Nazarene connected on 41.4 percent (12-for-29) of its shots. Woodard led the way with 13 points for the Trojans in the half while Sanford added 12.

Tusculum led 74-60 following a layup by Jumper with 16:22 remaining, but would not score a field goal for nearly four minutes while Trevecca Nazarene cut the deficit to 78-74 with 12:55 on the clock. Two free throws by Miles and a three-point play from Sanford brought the Trojans within 80-79 with 11:51 remaining, and two more foul shots from Woodard tied the game at 81-81 with 10:50 to go.

After Tusculum lost and regained the lead, it was the fifth three of the game from Flynn that pushed the Pioneers on top 101-94 with 3:35 left. Carter seemed to put the game away with a three-point play with 20 seconds left that gave Tusculum a 109-101 lead, but a three-point play by Sanford and two free throws by Woodard brought Trevecca Nazarene to 109-106 with three seconds on the clock. Walker then hit the second of two free throws with a second left to clinch the victory.

Freshman Zach Davis and sophomore BJ Fisher each had seven points and three rebounds off the bench for the Pioneers, while Fagan finished with six points on a pair of three-pointers. Matt Shown did not attempt a shot for Tusculum but led the way on the boards with a team-high five rebounds in 17 minutes of action.

Trevecca Nazarene finished the game shooting an even 50 percent (31-for-62) from the field and 9-for-16 from three-point range, while going 35-for-48 at the foul line as a team. The Trojans shot 57.6 percent (19-for-33) in the second half and outscored the Pioneers 58-48 over the final 20 minutes.

Tusculum will wrap up action at the Carson-Newman Classic on Saturday at 3 p.m. against Barton before returning to Holt Fieldhouse next Wednesday for its South Atlantic Conference opener with the host Eagles.
