Newberry College used a balanced scoring attack and 15
three-pointers to defeat Tusculum College 93-71 in a South Atlantic
Conference men's basketball game Wednesday night at Pioneer
Arena.
Mitch Riggs scored a game-high 16 points and Aegir Steinarsson
drained five three-pointers and was one of three players to score
15 points for the Wolves (13-12, 9-8 SAC), who secured the sixth
seed in next week's Food Lion SAC Tournament.
Keith Jumper and Neal Spinks shared the team lead with 13 points
apiece for the Pioneers (6-19, 4-13 SAC), who locked up the eighth
seed in the conference tournament following Catawba's win over
Carson-Newman and Brevard's loss to Anderson.
Brandon Riley had 15 points and a game-high eight assists for
Newberry, which received 15 points from Demarkus Smith along with
13 points and a game-best nine rebounds from Dondray Walker. As a
team, the Wolves shot 56.9 percent (29-for-51) from the field
including 15-for-31 (48.4 percent) from three-point range. Newberry
also went 20-for-28 at the free-throw line and finished with a
33-24 rebounding advantage over Tusculum.
Other than a brief 4-3 lead for the Pioneers in the opening minute,
the Wolves led from start to finish. Newberry shot 61.5 percent
(16-for-26) in the first half en route to a 49-31 halftime lead,
and extended its lead to as many as 25 points in the closing
minutes.
Steinarsson led the Wolves with 12 points on 4-for-6 shooting from
three-point range in the first half, while Spinks tallied seven
points in 13 minutes off the bench to pace the Pioneers. Tusculum
shot 52 percent (13-for-25) from the floor in the first half but
committed 10 turnovers which Newberry turned into 15 points.
Tusculum was able to chop the Newberry lead to 54-41 following a
putback by Spinks with 15:46 remaining, but the Wolves rattled off
eight straight points including three-pointers from James Ashby and
Smith to go on top 62-41 with 14:26 left. Newberry was unable to
keep up its blistering shooting pace in the second half, but still
connected on a solid 52 percent (13-for-25) after halftime
including 6-for14 from beyond the arc.
The Pioneers received a strong contribution off the bench from
freshman guard Rory McClure, who matched his season point total
with 10 points on 4-for-6 shooting in 23 minutes off the bench.
McClure also connected on two three-pointers in three attempts and
came up with three steals for Tusculum.
Senior Nick Spinks played in his final game at Pioneer Arena and
finished with nine points, three assists and a career-best five
steals in 31 minutes of action. Fellow senior James Clay earned his
first career start on Wednesday night and grabbed one rebound in
four minutes of playing time.
Jumper battled foul trouble for the Pioneers and finished with 13
points on 5-for-6 shooting in just 15 minutes. Neal Spinks also
shot 5-for-6 from the floor and pulled a team-high five rebounds in
22 minutes. Tusculum finished the game at exactly 50 percent
(26-for-52) from the field and went 15-for-24 at the foul line.
The Pioneers will wrap up their regular season on Saturday at 4
p.m. at Brevard, while Newberry will return home to host
Lenoir-Rhyne in their final home game of the season on
Saturday.
