Lincoln Memorial University held Tusculum College to six
second-half field goals and rallied for a 64-58 victory in South
Atlantic Conference men's basketball action at Tex Turner Arena
Wednesday night.
The 10th-ranked Railsplitters (15-2, 8-1 SAC) finished with a 47-32
edge in rebounding against the Pioneers (4-13, 2-7 SAC) and
received 14 points and six rebounds from Wally Jones in sweeping
the season series from Tusculum.
Addison Flynn led the Pioneers with 14 points on 6-for-11 shooting,
but Tusculum hit just six of its 21 shots in the second half (28.6
percent) and let a 29-25 halftime lead slip away. Overall, the
Pioneers went 18-for-50 (36 percent) from the field in the
game.
Joining Jones in double figures for the Railsplitters were Vincent
Bailey, with 13 points and six rebounds, and Lorenza Ross with 12
points and five boards. Jake Troyli scored seven points but grabbed
a game-high 11 rebounds for Lincoln Memorial, which had 15 of its
47 boards on the offensive end.
Neal Spinks also reached double figures for the Pioneers,
contributing 11 points and five rebounds in 20 minutes off the
bench. Darius Carter added nine points and six rebounds and JD
Miller chipped in with eight points and six boards for Tusculum in
the game.
The teams swapped the lead several times in the opening minutes,
before back-to-back baskets by Miller gamve the Pioneers a 16-9
lead with 9:50 left in the first half. The Pioneers carried the
lead all the way through the half, going to the locker room with a
four-point advantage.
Flynn led the Pioneers with eight points in the first half and
Spinks added seven points and four rebounds for Tusculum. Ross
paced the Railsplitters with six points and four boards in the
first half, but LMU shot 33.3 percent (9-for-27) from the field as
a team and went 1-for-7 from three-point range.
Lincoln Memorial tied the game at 29-29 on back-to-back baskets by
Tim Pierce and Bailey to open the second half. The game would be
tied at 31 and 33 before Jones hit a three-pointer with 15:19 left
to give the Railsplitters the lead for good at 36-35.
Jones added another three-pointer and followed with a putback to
cap a 7-0 run and give the Railsplitters their largest lead to that
point at 45-37 with 11:10 to go. The Pioneers pulled within two at
47-45 on a basket by Keith Jumper with 8:24 left, but an offensive
foul call on Jumper during the next possession sent the Pioneers'
leading scorer to the bench with his fourth foul.
With Jumper on the sidelines, the Railsplitters reeled off seven
straight points to go on top 54-45 with 6:27 left. The Pioneers
were able to trim the deficit to five points on two occasions, the
latter on a three-pointer from Flynn with 22 seconds left, but
Jones and Pierce each hit a pair of free throws in the closing
moments to lock up the win for the Railsplitters.
Pierce, who started in the place of the injured Cam Carden, played
33 minutes for LMU and finished with nine points. Dustin Craig
contributed seven rebounds in 25 minutes off the Railsplitters'
bench and Curtis McMillion added four points and five boards in
just seven minutes of playing time.
Jumper finished with six points and five rebounds for the Pioneers
in 22 minutes before fouling out, just the second time in the last
eight games that he failed to reach double figures.
The Pioneers finished with a season-low eight turnovers, including
just two in the first half, and went 18-for-29 at the free-throw
line. Lincoln Memorial committed 13 turnovers and shot 17-for-25 at
the stripe in the contest.
Tusculum will return home to face Brevard in a SAC matchup Saturday
afternoon at 4 p.m. at Pioneer Arena.
