GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Since the inception of
the three-point shot, the Tusculum College men's basketball team
has taken full advantage of that weapon. The Pioneers made at
least one three-pointer in 709 straight games, until Wednesday
night as TC went 0-for-7 from beyond the arc in a 59-52 home loss
to Lenoir-Rhyne University.
Of those 709 games, the last 409 have been as a NCAA Division II
member.
During the remarkable 709-game run that spans over a quarter of century, the Pioneers connected on 4,920 three-pointers, averaging 6.93 per contest and resulting into 14,760 points from long-range.
Over the past 27 years, the Pioneers have had the streak come into jeopardy on a few occasions.
The streak nearly came to an end last season at Lenoir-Rhyne (Jan. 25, 2012) as the Pioneers missed their first eight 3-point attempts. On its final possession of the game, Justin Steigerwald drained a three-pointer with 0.8 seconds remaining to preserve the streak.
Over the last 27 years, Tusculum has been limited to only one 3-pointer on 15 occasions. One of the most memorable close calls was three years ago against Brevard College. TC went 1-for-11 from beyond the arc with the only trey coming on a 52-foot heave at the end of the first half by Nick Gagel.
Below are some highlights of Tusculum's 709-game three-point field goal streak.
