HARROGATE, Tenn. --- Beau Brown scored 23 points and Terry Delaney added 19 as the Lincoln Memorial men's basketball team recorded a 70-64 win over visiting Tusculum College Wednesday night at Tex Turner Arena. LMU (7-14, 1-8 SAC) captures its first league win of the season, while splitting the season series with the Pioneers (8-13, 2-7 SAC).
Joining Brown and Delaney in double figures for the Railsplitters were Ryan Whitaker (13) and Joseph Wadner (11).
Tusculum's Lavonti Jeter led the Pioneers with 16 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Jordan Lear added 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting, while Kyle Moore finished with 15 points, five rebounds and four assists off the bench. Rookie Robert Troutman was perfect on the night going 3-for-3 from the floor, including a three-pointer and 2-of-2 shooting at the foul line for his nine markers.
LMU led 40-34 at the half and would increase that advantage to nine points on a couple of occasions, including with 5:02 left in the game following a bucket by Brown. Tusculum answered with a 9-1 run as the Pioneers trimmed the deficit to 61-60 as Moore made one of two free throws with 2:17 left on the clock.
The Railsplitters got a huge lay-up by Delaney and Wadner added a pair of free throws as LMU led by five (65-60) with 1:10 remaining. Tusculum made one final push as Lear scored a lay-up with 47 seconds left and after a turnover by LMU, Moore fired a three-pointer was off the mark, but he came up with his own miss and found Jeter underneath the basket for the lay-up as TC trailed only by one with 28 seconds left.
Tusculum fouled Brown, sending him to the free throw line where he made one of two as the visitors trailed by 66-64 with a chance to tie for take the lead. But the Pioneers wouldn't get a shot off as Brown came up with a steal and he was fouled. Brown would make both of his free throws with 10 seconds left to seal the victory.
Tusculum came out on fire to open the game, jumping out to a 12-4 lead at the 13:33 mark, following a three-pointer by Lear. With TC leading 27-20, LMU would score 12 unanswered points, including a three-pointer by Brown as LMU led 32-27 with 4:02 left before halftime.
The Pioneers will be looking to end its six-game losing streak on Saturday when they face Catawba (No. 10 in NCAA Division II South Atlantic Region). Tusculum defeated Catawba last month 82-79 on a Lear game-winning three pointer in the final second of that game.
