Tusculum hosts Catawba in football home opener

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- After compiling 1,700 round-trip miles, the Tusculum University football team will play its first home game of the season when they host Catawba College this Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. from the Niswonger Sports Complex and Pioneer Field.

This Saturday will be the 2023 home opener for the Pioneers after playing its first three games of the year away from Greeneville.

Tusculum (1-2, 1-0 SAC) is coming off its first win of the season, while Catawba (2-1, 0-1 SAC) suffered its first setback of 2023.

The Pioneers utilized timely defense, solid special teams play and three key scoring drives orchestrated by sophomore quarterback Matthew Palazzo as TU posted a 23-21 upset win at nationally-ranked Wingate University. Palazzo, a Greene County native and Chuckey-Doak High School alum, ran for two touchdowns and completed a 46-yard touchdown to Tyler Burke with 2:59 left in the game to secure Tusculum's first win at Wingate since 2014.

The Catawba Indians dropped its league-opener last week in a 35-20 loss to defending SAC Mountain Division champion Mars Hill in Salisbury, North Carolina.

Mars Hill generated 461 yards offensively including a 206-rushing yard performance by Jon Gullette. Catawba quarterback Preston Brown passed for 321 yards and three touchdowns including a pair to Bo Pryor. Pryor finished with a career-high 162 receiving yards on his eight catches in the loss.

LAST WEEK

The Pioneers got a badly needed victory, rallying to a 23-21 win at 24th-ranked Wingate, ending a four-game losing streak dating back to last season (all on the road) and also snapping a four-game skid to the Bulldogs who posted an 11-win season last year and advanced to the NCAA Division II national quarterfinal.

Offensively in the Wingate game, Palazzo threw for 202 yards on 15-of-30 passing with a touchdown and zero interceptions. He also rushed for a pair of touchdowns to spot TU to a 14-0 in the first half.

After Wingate tied the game at 14-14, the duo of Davajon White and Gavin Rowell sacked quarterback Noah Bell in the end zone for a safety for a 16-14 lead.

The Bulldogs regained the lead with a touchdown with five minutes to go. With no timeouts, Palazzo orchestrated a six-play, 75-yard drive culminating with his 46-yard TD toss to Burke for the game-winning score with less than three minutes left.

Wingate had one last chance with five seconds left, but Marcel Bowes intercepted Bell at the WU 3 on the final play of the game.

All-SAC linebacker Wesley Scott led the way for the Pioneers defensively as he posted 11 tackles including a SAC. White earned SAC Defensive Player of the Week honors as he finished with six tackles, two sacks and a QB hurry.

SCOUTING THE CATAWBA INDIANS

Coach Haines was named the 22nd head football coach at Catawba following the 2022 campaign which saw the Tribe go 1-10 and winless in the conference including a 50-17 home loss to Tusculum. Haines served as offensive coordinator at Shepherd University in 2022 as the Rams went 13-2, won the PSAC Eastern Division title and advanced to the NCAA II national semifinal. Haines previously served as head coach at Urbana University for five years before the school closed at the end of the 2019-20 academic year.

THE SERIES

The 27th renewal of one of the more entertaining football rivalries in the South Atlantic Conference takes place this week as the Tusculum Pioneers host the Catawba Indians.

Thirteen (13) of the last 22 encounters between Tusculum and Catawba have been decided by 10 points or less. In the 26 previous meetings, 12 have been decided by a single possession, including five by three points or fewer.

Catawba leads the all-time series 17-9 and has won seven of the last 11 encounters.

Tusculum's first game against a nationally-ranked NCAA Division II opponent was No. 7 Catawba in 1997.  TU's first win over a nationally-ranked DII foe was Catawba the following year as the Pioneers upset the Tribe 23-21 at Shuford Stadium.  In fact, three of TU's 13 wins against nationally-ranked teams have been against Catawba in 1998, 2004 and 2007.

That 2004 win came during TU's Homecoming in a 42-35 victory as Fredd Staton rushed for the winning TD with 36 seconds left. Catawba still had enough time to get off a 20-yard pass to the end zone on the game's final play but TU's Eric McIntyre intercepted Catawba All-American Luke Samples as the Pioneers knocked off the 12th-ranked Indians.

Catawba won the first two meetings in 1996 and 1997, before TU posted the 1998 upset in Salisbury.  The Indians followed with five straight victories from 1999-2003.  TU won three of the next four meetings from 2004-2007 and Catawba followed with back-to-back wins in 2008 and 2009.

Tusculum and Catawba met on the gridiron every season from 1996-2019 with the string ending at 24 in a row when the two did not meet in the 2021 COVID abbreviated spring campaign.
