Box score

BREVARD, N.C. --- Brevard College took advantage of five turnovers and rushed for over 300 yards as the Tornados defeated visiting Tusculum College 52-33 Saturday afternoon at Brevard Memorial Stadium in South Atlantic Conference football action.

Brevard (3-7, 2-5 SAC) converted the Tusculum miscues into 24 points as BC handed the Pioneers (3-7, 1-5 SAC) their fifth straight loss. TC will close out its season next Saturday as the Pioneers host cross-mountain rival Mars Hill University for a 1:30 p.m. kickoff for Senior Day.

BC junior Jordan Ollis rushed for 131 yards on 31 carries and scored five touchdowns (4 rush, 1 receiving), while freshman quarterback Kevin Herbst ran for 93 yards, while also passing for 78 yards and two touchdowns.

It was a record-breaking afternoon for Tusculum sophomore Justin Houston as he established a new program single-game record with 317 all-purpose yards. He breaks the previous mark of 311 which was set by Xzanvion Smith in last year's meeting against the Tornados.

Houston tallied a dozen receptions for a career-high 193 receiving yards (4th in TC history) on Saturday with a touchdown. He also recorded 122 yards on his six kickoff returns and was credited with a two-yard run.

Houston also broke three Tusculum single-season records. He has made 99 receptions for 1,186 yards, breaking the previous TC marks held by Deonte' Gist in 2010 (96-1183). Houston has also smashed the all-purpose yardage record for a season with 1,753 (1,713, Gist in 2010).

TC quarterback Bo Cordell passed for 332 yards and two touchdowns as he went 31-for-51, but was intercepted three times on the afternoon. Freshman running back Isaac Robinson rushed nine times for 81 yards and a pair of TDs, while rookie Fernando Smith dashed for 47 yards on nine attempts, including his eighth TD run of the year.

Tusculum amassed 502 yards of offense, while Brevard tallied 381, including 303 on the ground as the Tornados held the football for nearly 40 minutes (39:57).

Both teams would score on their first possessions to start the game. Brevard marched 61 yards on 11 straight rushing plays, capped off by Ollis' one-yard plunge. Ben Noboa's extra point gave BC the 7-0 lead. TC answered with an eight-play, 71-yard drive as Robinson scored from three yards out. Logan Cornelius' kick tied the game at 7-7 with 6:37 remaining in the quarter. The big play of the drive was a 44-yard completion from Cordell to Houston on third down and 10 to get to the BC 2.

On Brevard's second possession, the Tornados got inside the red zone, but the drive stalled at the TC 16. Noboa came onto attempt a 38-yard field goal, but the kick was blocked by 6-10 tight end Wesley Powell to keep the game tied.

In the opening moments of the second quarter, Cordell was intercepted by Devon Holmes and he returned the pick 25 yards to the TC 45. Brevard would convert the turnover into points on Noboa's 27-yard field goal as the Tornados regained the lead 10-7 with 10:26 left before halftime.

Houston fumbled the ensuing kickoff which was recovered by the Tornados at the TC 30. Six plays later, Ollis ran in for his second TD of the game from four yards out to up the BC lead to 17-7 at the 7:41 mark of the period.

Tusculum bounced as the Pioneers converted three times on third down and once on fourth down as Smith scored on a two-yard run to pull TC to within 17-13 with 1:52 remaining in the half. The extra point try failed.

The Tusculum defense held on three straight plays to force a punt as the Pioneers took over at their own 18-yard line with 55 seconds left before the intermission.

Cordell completed a 35-yard strike to Houston to get to midfield. Two more passes to Houston moved the Pioneers to the BC 39. TC looked to be in business as Cordell completed a 34-yard toss to Johnathan Diliberto to the BC 5, but the Pioneers were whistled for offensive pass interference. Cordell would be sacked on the next play at the TC 44 with five seconds remaining. Cordell's desperation heave at the horn was intercepted by BC's Jacob McCleery to end the half.

Tusculum received the kickoff to start the third quarter. Cordell completed three straight passes to Ken Funnye, while Matt Levine hauled in a nine-yard catch to get to the BC 45. Cordell scrambled for 13 yards and Brevard was later whistled for a personal foul to move the football to the BC 6. The drive would stall there as Cornelius came aboard to kick a 23-yard field goal but his attempt was wide left.

The TC defense held once again as Herbst was sacked by senior linebacker Dustin Lane on third down as the Tornados were forced to punt as Tusculum took over at the TC 44. Robinson rushed for 56 yards on his next three carries, including a 39-yarder to get to the BC 6 and would run it in from there for his second score TD of the game and eighth rushing touchdown of the year. Cornelius made the kick as Tusculum took its first lead of the game at 20-17 with 6:48 left in the third quarter.

Brevard would score 21 unanswered points over next 10 minutes, while taking advantage of a pair of TC turnovers to take a 38-20 lead with 11:34 remaining in the game.

Houston put his name into the scoring column with his 18-yard touchdown catch from Cordell with 9:57 left to trim the deficit to 38-26. But Brevard answered with an 80-yard drive. Ollis ran for 33 yards to the TC 47 and Herbst completed a 40-yard toss to Trey Brey to the TC 3. Ollis finished off the drive with a three-yard run for his fourth touchdown of the afternoon as BC led 45-26 with 6:58 left.

Tusculum answered with another score as Cordell found Deon Hicks in the corner of the end zone from 12 yards away for his fourth TD catch of the season.

Trailing by a dozen again with 5:25 remaining, Tusculum attempted an on-side kick but was recovered by the Tornados. Brevard tacked on a late touchdown for good measure as Ollis scored his fifth TD of the day, this time on a 10-yard pass from Herbst to provide the final scoring margin.

Tusculum junior Wayne Soliai led the Pioneers with a season-high 15 tackles, while senior Brian Alexander finished with 13 tackles, including two for loss. LiRonta Archie and Dustin Lane added nine tackles each, while Josh Davis and Caushaud Lyons finished eight tackles apiece.

Brevard was led defensively by Rufus Jenkins' 10 tackles, including three for loss and a sack, while Michael Gruber added 10 stops.
