Pioneers begin spring football practice today

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- The Tusculum College football will open its spring camp today (Monday) on the Greeneville campus.

Tusculum head coach Frankie DeBusk, who just completed his 15th season on the Pioneer sidelines this past fall, has two new coaches on the Tusculum staff including Teddy Gaines and Jarvis Littlejohn.

Gaines is serving as defensive passing game coordinator and mentors the TC defensive backs. He coached last season at Maryville College and prior to that served on the football staffs at Brevard College and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. He was also a standout defensive back at the University of Tennessee and was a member of the Volunteers' 1998 national championship squad.

Littlejohn, who starred on the Tusculum gridiron from 2005-08, is serving as running backs coach for the Pioneers. The 2008 Tusculum graduate returns to the Greeneville campus after serving the last four years on the coaching staff at Gaffney (S.C.) High School. Prior to Gaffney, he served a graduate assistant football coach at Delta State University. As a player, he was a two-time All-South Atlantic Conference linebacker, including TC's 2008 conference championship season.

Offensively, the Pioneers return All-Americans in quarterback Bo Cordell and wide receiver Xzanvion Smith. All-SAC linebacker Brian Alexander returns to lead the Tusculum defense.

Per NCAA regulations, the Pioneers will practice in helmets only for their first two practices, before going in full gear.

TC will conduct three scrimmages this month, beginning with the first on Saturday, April 13th at 1 p.m. A second scrimmage will follow on Saturday, April 20th and spring drills will culminate with the Tusculum Spring Game, slated for Saturday, April 27th at 2 p.m.
