Tusculum holds second spring football scrimmage

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- The Tusculum College football team held its second spring scrimmage on Thursday.

The 99-play scrimmage continues the rehabilitation of redshirt junior quarterback Bo Cordell and the newly installed defense for Tusculum defensive coordinator Mike Iezzi.

Cordell, who missed most of the 2011 season due to a broken foot, went 16-for-20 for 121 passing yards and three touchdowns. Cameron Tallent saw a majority of the snaps in the scrimmage, as he went 20-for-33 for 129 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.

Kenny Funnye was the top target of the day, hauling in six receptions for 46 yards, while 6-10 tight end Wesley Powell posted two catches for 16 yards. Jonathon Diliberto posted three grabs for 19 yards and two touchdowns, while Kyle Dickey tallied three receptions for 28 yards and a score. William Pooser accounted for the final touchdown as he posted two receptions for eight yards.

Chad Blakely led the Tusculum running backs, recording 12 carries for 48 yards and two touchdowns, while also hauled in three receptions for 35 yards. BJ Spradlin added six rushes for 24 yards and two scores, while also making two receptions for eight yards and a TD. Chris Burns also scored a rushing touchdown as he rushed four times for 19 yards.

Defensively, Brian Alexander led the charge with nine tackles, two sacks and three quarterback hurries, while Josh Davis accounted for seven tackles and an interception.

"Our attention to detail continues to be impressive. I feel like our kids are starving to be taught and they are listening and that proof lies in our production as an entire team, especially on the defensive side of the ball," said Tusculum head coach Frankie DeBusk. "I continue to be impressed with the defensive staff and their approach. Coach Iezzi and Coach (Tim) Tobin are true teachers of the game and Coach (Kevin) Weston has our defensive line playing very hard.

"Offensively, it is great to have No. 19 throwing the football and making plays for us. Bo is special and we all know that, but his leadership and his level of maturity is definitely different from the last couple of years."

The Pioneers will host its annual Spring Game next Saturday at 2 p.m.
