CLEVELAND, Miss. --- Tusculum College's journey in the
NCAA Division II Football Playoffs continues this Saturday as the
Pioneers face top-seeded Delta State University in a second round
game beginning at 1 p.m. (EST) in Cleveland, Miss. The game will be
played at Travis Parker Field at Horace McCool Stadium.
Ticket prices are $10 for general admission and $5 for students
with a valid ID.
The Pioneers (9-3) advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 with last week's
thrilling 34-22 come-from-behind win over Albany State University.
Tusculum has tied a school record for most wins in a season, while
making its first trip to the NCAA postseason. The Pioneers captured
their second South Atlantic Conference championship and have won
their last four games, and six of its last seven.
Delta State (9-1) is the top seed in Super Region Two and received
a bye to the second round. The Statesmen have won their last nine
games while winning their second straight Gulf South Conference
title. Former Tusculum assistant head coach and defensive
coordinator Ron Roberts, is in his second season at the helm of the
Delta State program. He has been named the GSC Coach of the Year
the last two seasons.
Tusculum also has some strong Delta State ties with assistant
coaches Pete Golding and Karl Scott. Golding, a 2006 Delta State
graduate, is in his second season on the Tusculum coaching staff
and first as defensive coordinator. Golding served as a graduate
assistant coach at his alma mater in 2006. During his playing
career at Delta State, he earned All-Conference honors in 2004.
Scott, who joined the Tusculum staff this past January as
linebacker coach, was a graduate assistant at Delta State last
year.
The winner of this week's second round match-up will advance to
the Super Region Two final against the winner of the North
Alabama/Valdosta State game.
