ROCK HILL, S.C. --- The Tusculum Pioneers have earned the No. 8 seed for the 2023 South Atlantic Conference Baseball Championship. Tusculum has qualified for the SAC Tournament in 22 of the last 23 seasons.
This year's SAC Championship Tournament will be held over the next two weekends with the opening round taking place Apr. 28-30 at campus sites and concluding with a best-of-three series on May 7-8 at Smokies Stadium in Kodak, Tennessee.
Newberry claimed the top-seed and will host one half of the double-elimination opening round at the Smith Road Complex in Newberry, South Carolina. Joining the Wolves will be Tusculum, No. 4 Carson-Newman and No. 5 Lenoir-Rhyne.
On the other half of the bracket, No. 2 Wingate will host the opening round at Ron Christopher Stadium in Wingate, North Carolina. The Bulldogs will host No. 3 Catawba, No. 6 Lincoln Memorial and No. 7 Anderson this weekend.
Tusculum will open against Newberry this Friday night at 6:30 p.m. That game will be proceeded by the Carson-Newman / Lenoir-Rhyne match-up at 3 p.m. The double-elimination bracket will continue on Saturday and Sunday with the winner advancing to the May 7-8 SAC Championship Series in Kodak, Tennessee.
The SAC Baseball Championship winner will earn the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Division II Tournament which will be held next month at campus sites.
In their SAC Tournament history, the Pioneers have won the championship four times with the last coming in 2016. The Pioneers have won the SAC Tournament in 2005, 2008, 2012 and 2016. Tusculum is 51-36 all-time in SAC postseason play.
