JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. --- Trey Miller homered twice and seven Carson-Newman pitchers combined on a three-hit shutout as the Eagles downed visiting Tusculum 13-0 Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference baseball game at the Silver Diamond Complex.

Carson-Newman (9-11) avenges a 10-4 loss to Tusculum (14-5) in last month's meeting in Greeneville.

The Eagles recorded 10 hits, nine walks, two hit batters and three Tusculum errors in the win.

C-N got a run in the first inning, two each in the second and third and erupted for seven in the fourth to take a 12-0 lead.

Miller led off the bottom of the first with his first homer of the day. In the second, C-N plated two unearned runs to take a 3-0 lead. In the third, Nelson Smith had a two-out, two-run single to make it a 5-0 game.

The Eagles sent 12 batters to the plate in the fourth frame, scoring seven times on two singles, six walks and a hit batter to blow the game wide open.

The C-N pitching staff had a no-hitter going into the sixth inning before Zach Brunet's two-out single broke up the no-hit bid. The Pioneers got runners aboard with seven walks themselves, but TU would leave 10 runners on base. TU got singles in the ninth inning from Britten Robinson and Max Schmarder before Carson-Newman's Brock Culpepper got a fly out and a ground out to preserve the shutout.

C-N's Dalton McLain had two hits, while William Gibbs also had a two-hit game to go along with his two RBI.

Eagles' starter Grif Hughes picked up the win in a scheduled start as he struck out five in his two innings of work. TU starting pitcher Drew Sliwinski (0-2) had the loss.

Tusculum reliever Jacob Willett retired all six batters he would face with two strikeouts in his two innings on the bump.

The Pioneers return home this weekend for a three-game South Atlantic Conference series against Limestone beginning with Friday's nine-inning contest.
