Ranel homers twice in SAC sweep over UVA Wise

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Tyler Ranel hit a pair of home runs in the first game including a grand slam as Tusculum University swept a South Atlantic Conference baseball doubleheader with UVA Wise Sunday at Pioneer Park.

Ranel went 3-for-6 with two homers and six RBI in Tusculum's 10-4 win in the opener. Shortstop Ben Scartz went 3-for-3 with three RBI and Brady Salyards pitched a five-inning gem as TU completed the sweep with a 6-1 win in the night-cap.

The Pioneers (10-3, 2-1 SAC) take two in the weekend three-game set as TU has won 10 of its last 11 games. UVA Wise (4-12, 1-2 SAC) had its three-game winning streak halted.

Game 1: Tusculum 10, UVA Wise 4

Ranel belted a grand slam and tacked on a two-run inside-the-park homer as Tusculum bounced back from Friday's SAC opening loss with a 10-4 victory over the Highland Cavaliers.

Tusculum recorded 10 hits in the game with six being of the extra-base variety. Scartz and Christian Ortega each had multiple-hit outings.

Meanwhile, TU starting pitcher Seth Willis, followed last week's no-hitter with another quality start as he went 6.2 innings and recorded nine strikeouts for the win to improve to 3-1 on the young season. Willis allowed two runs on five hits and four walks in his 123-pitch performance.

Ortega led off the second inning with a base hit, moved to second on a bunt and scored on Murphy Flood's double to the wall.

Tusculum made it 5-0 in the fourth frame as the Pioneers mounted a two-out rally with Flood being hit by a pitch, Will Sameulson singled and Blaze McCauley drew a walk to load the baes. Ranel followed with a grand slam down the left field line.

Willis worked around three innings where the leadoff batter got aboard but he and the Pioneers kept the Cavs scoreless.

Tusculum added a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth as Zane Keener triples and scored on Scartz' fourth double of the year. He would cross the plate himself on Ortega's fourth double of the season as the Pioneers led 8-0.

In the seventh inning, Wise had two runners aboard with two outs. DJ Dickson lifted a fly ball to right field which was initially called a good diving catch by Flood for the final out of the inning. But after a lengthy conference by the umpires, Dickson was credited with a hit to load the bases.  Willis' first offering hit the back of Hunter Meador to spoil the shutout.

Willis day was over as Trejen Fox-Birdwell took over. Trejen Fox-Birdwell took over on the mound and threw a wild pitch would bring in Matt Frye with the inning's second run. After another walk to load the bases, Fox-Birdwell struck out Jeb Hurst to end the treat as TU led 8-2.

In the bottom of the seventh with two outs, McCauley drew a walk and Ranel lifted a fly ball to the warning trek in left field. The ball caromed off the wall and the two fielders allowing Ranel to motor around the bases and scored on the rare inside-the-park homer to make it a 10-2 game. The Cavs added a run each in the eighth and ninth innings before TU settled for a 10-4 win.

The Cavs finished the game with seven hits including two-hit efforts by Cole Harness and Justin Reed. UVA Wise drew eight walks while striking out 13 times.

Ranel's six RBI performance is tied for the seventh-most in a Tusculum single-game.

Game 2: Tusculum 6, UVA Wise 1

Brady Salyards allowed one run on seven hits with zero walks and seven strikeouts in Tusculum's 6-1 victory over UVA Wise.

Salyards (3-0) remains undefeated on the season as he went five innings in his 101-pitch win. Meanwhile reliever Billy Quinn retired all six batters he would face to record his first save of the year.

Scartz three-hit game including his team-leading fifth double of the season and extended his hitting streak to nine in a row.

Tusculum had two good chances to get on the scoreboard first in the first two innings but were unable to cash in. In the first, Zane Keener got on with his one-out double and Scartz drew a walk to put runners at first and second. Keener tried to steal third but was thrown out by catcher Jacob Boyle. Boyle would also throw out Scartz at second base to end the threat.

In the second frame. Ortega reached on a lead-off error, moved to second on a bunt and advanced to third on a wild pitch. But Wise starter Daniel Kanagy left him there with back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning.

Tusculum finally broke through in the third inning as Scartz hit a two-out double to right field to bring home Ranel from second base. TU added two important runs in the fourth as Wes Reynolds opened with a walk and was bunted to second. He would later score on Samuelson's RBI hit to left field to extend his hitting streak to six straight games.

Leading 3-0, the Cavaliers got two runners on base with two outs, but a Salyards strikeout ended the inning to preserve the Tusculum advantage.

UVA Wise led off the sixth inning with back-to-back doubles to make it a 3-1 game. Quinn took over the mound and got a fly out, a ground out and an infield pop up to end the inning. Tusculum added three unearned runs in the third inning. Kaden Swaim laid down a squeeze bunt to score Rudy Fernandez from third. Scartz would hit a two-run single up the middle to give Tusculum some breathing room, leading 6-1.

Quinn retired the side in order to end the game.
