Pioneers drop doubleheader at Queens

CHARLOTTE, N.C. --- The Queens University of Charlotte baseball team swept both ends of a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader over visiting Tusculum University Saturday afternoon at Tuckaseegee Field.

The Royals (9-6, 3-0 SAC) won by scores of 5-2 in the opener and 10-0 in the night-cap to complete the weekend sweep over the Pioneers (7-7, 0-3 SAC).

Game 1: Queens 5, Tusculum 2

Alex Sexton went 3-for-4 and Carter Foster tallied a double, a triple and two RBI to lead Queens to a 5-2 victory in Saturday's opening game.

The Royals racked up a dozen hits in the game including multi-hit performances by Sexton, Foster, Garrett Evans, Nick Brassington and Nick Alderfer.

Queens starter Justin Offschanka picked up the victory as he tossed 5.2 shutout innings and limited the Pioneers to a pair of hits with a walk and four strikeouts. Zach Kelly was roughed up for two runs and four hits in his 1.1 innings on the mound. But reliever Landen Wright tossed two hitless innings including a perfect ninth inning when he struck out the side to record his first save of 2022.

Tusculum starter Gunner Becker (1-2) suffered the loss allowing two runs on eight hits, one walk and struck out five.

Queens scratch out a run each in the second and third innings to take a 2-0 lead. Sexton drove in the game's first run with his two-out double in the second and Garrett Evans had a RBI single in the third.

The Pioneers cut the deficit in half in the top of the sixth inning when Luis Ezra hit a solo home run to right field, his third of the season to make it a 2-1 game.

The Royals took advantage of a pair of TU errors in the bottom of the sixth, resulting into three runs for the home team off of TU reliever Drew Sliwinski. Alderfer reached on a one-out single and moved to third when Nick Melton reached on a fielding error. Foster tripled down the right field line to bring home Alderfer and Melton and Evans brought home Foster on his two-out single to make it a 5-1 game.

In the top of the seventh, Murphy Flood led off with a base hit, moved to second on a ground out and later scored on Zane Keener's RBI single to right field to make it 5-2, but that would be as close as the Pioneers would get.

Game 2: Queens 10, Tusculum 0

The Queens pitching duo of Christian Brown and Jordan Briones combined a five-hit, seven inning shutout in a 10-0 victory over Tusculum in the series finale. Brown tossed a four-hitter through the first six innings with four strikeouts to improve to 2-0 on the season.

The Royals posted 12 hits in the contest as Foster went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and Zach Weston drove in four runs including his three-run double in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Tusculum's Kyle Williams went 2-for-3, while Zach Wilson recorded his second double of the season.

The Pioneers will be on the road on Wednesday for a non-conference tilt at Carson-Newman University beginning at 2 p.m. at the Silver Diamond Complex.
