Pioneers end homestand with loss to No. 26 Young Harris

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- The Young Harris baseball team muscled out a dozen hits, while three pitchers limited host Tusculum to four base hits as the 26th-ranked Mountain Lions prevailed 10-1 on a rainy Tuesday afternoon at Pioneer Park.

Young Harris improves to 7-4 on the season, while Tusculum (7-4) has its four-game winning streak halted. TU will open South Atlantic Conference play this weekend for a three-game series at Queens University of Charlotte.

YHC's Kyle Ayers and Ethan Underwood posted three hits apiece, while Marco Colina tallied a pair of hits including a three-run homer in the second inning to give the Mountain Lions all the offense it would need.

Young Harris scored three runs in the second, two in the fifth, one in the sixth and four in the ninth. The Pioneers lone run of the game came in the fifth inning on Wes Reynolds lead-off home run to left field.

YHC stranded 12 runners on base, while Tusculum left six aboard. The Pioneers were retired in order in four innings and went hitless in the final three frames.

Young Harris starting pitcher Cole Edwards pitched a one-hit shutout through the first four innings with a walk and three strikeouts. He was relieved in the fifth inning by McLain Harris as he went three innings, allowed three hits, one run, a walk and three strikeouts. Travis Burnette pitched the final two innings while not allowing a hit with three strikeouts.

Tusculum used six pitchers as starter Brice Anders (0-1) suffered the loss. Reynolds went 2-for-3 at the plate, while Luis Ezra hit a double and Dylan Symonds had a base hit.

The Pioneers complete their eight-game homestand with a 5-3 record, all against nationally-ranked opponents including two wins against 36th-ranked Illinois Springfield and a three-game sweep over No. 29 Molloy.
