Tusculum falls 13-5 to No. 36 Illinois Springfield in home opener

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Asher Bradd recorded four hits and Brant Vanaman posted a pair including a grand slam in leading No. 36 Illinois Springfield to a 13-5 win over host Tusculum Friday afternoon at Pioneer Park.

The Prairie Stars (1-0) finished the game with 13 hits including seven of the extra-base variety as Colton Hale pitched five strong innings as UIS took game one of the four-game weekend series in the inaugural meeting between the Stars and the Pioneers (2-2).

Tusculum finished the game with eight hits, including a two-hit performance by senior Kyle Williams.

Bradd opened the game with a triple off of TU starter Gunner Becker. Becker looked to have worked out of trouble with an infield pop out and a strikeout. But Bradd plated the first run of the game, scoring a two-out error.

UIS added three runs in the second inning, highlighted by Bradd's two-run double as the Stars went up 4-0.

Tusculum answered with a run in the bottom of the second inning as Jaden Steagall came through with a two-out double to drive in Zach Wilson to trim the deficit to 4-1.

Illinois Springfield erupted for four runs in the fourth inning and added five more in the sixth to take a 13-1 advantage. Bradd sparked the four-run, fourth frame with his two-run single which was followed by Brandon Bannon's RBI triple. Alderman's grand slam to center field made it a 12-run lead in favor of the visitors.

Tusculum responded with two runs each in the final two innings, but it would not be enough as the Prairie Stars took the series lid-lifter.

TU reliever Jacob Willett tossed two shutout innings in the eighth and ninth as he worked around a single and posted four strikeouts.

The two teams will play a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, followed by a 12 p.m. single game on Sunday to conclude the series.
