Pioneers listed among national leaders in NCAA baseball statistics

INDIANAPOLIS --- Tusculum University pitcher Charles Hall continues to lead the nation in strikeouts while second baseman Daulton Martin in tops in the country in doubles according to the NCAA Division II baseball statistics.

As a team, the Pioneers (18-10, 7-2 in South Atlantic Conference) are ranked in six categories including bases on balls where Tusculum continues to be the national leader with 155 walks.

Martin, a junior from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, is listed in nine statistical categories.  His 17 doubles lead all of Division II and is also ranked seventh nationally in total bases (74), eighth in walks (25), ninth in RBI (33), 11th in runs scored (32), 28th in slugging percentage (.779), 33rd in hits (37), 36th in home runs (6) and 45th in on-base percentage (.535).  Martin has hit safely in his last nine games and is batting .389 this year which is the sixth-best average in the South Atlantic Conference.

Hall, a senior right-hander from Dumfries, Virginia, has recorded a DII-leading 88 strikeouts this year, which are already tied for sixth in a TU single-season.  His 17.34 strikeouts per nine innings pitched averaged is second in the country while his four pitching victories are 34th in the land.  Last Friday, he broke the NCAA II single-game record with 22 strikeouts against Queens University of Charlotte.  It was his sixth straight appearance where he has struck out at least 10 batters.  He has a 4-0 record with a conference-leading 1.58 earned run average.

Sophomore third baseman Bryson Ford is listed four times in this week's statistics where he is 17th in stolen bases (15), 32nd in bases on balls (20), 35th in runs scored (28) and 41st in runs batted in (27).  The Knoxville, Tennessee product has a four-game hitting streak and is batting .350 which is the second highest average on the team.

Jaden Steagall, a freshman shortstop from Hiram, Georgia, is seventh in hit-by-pitch (11) and 32nd in walks (20).  His 11 times he has been hit by a pitch is tied for ninth most in a TU season and is currently third in the SAC.

Senior reliever Christian Cuba (Miami, Fla.) leads the team with his four saves, which hare 19th in the nation and fourth in the league.  Senior outfielder Jarel McDade (Magnolia, Texas) is 32nd nationally with his 27 RBI and sophomore Trey Hinton (Knoxville, Tenn.) is 10th in the nation with his 24 walks.

The Pioneers are also ninth in the nation in total runs scored (216), 12th in strikeouts per nine innings pitched (11.1), 13th in stolen bases (52), 21st in shutouts (2) and 48th in double plays turned (16).

Tusculum returns to action on Wednesday as Bluefield State comes to Pioneer Park for a 4 p.m. contest.
