Tusculum baseball beats Bluefield State 14-3 in front of record crowd

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Nick Rodriguez and Andrew Bowerman pounded out three hits apiece to lead the Tusculum College baseball team to a 14-3 win over Bluefield State College in front a school-record crowd of 1,734 at Pioneer Park Saturday night.

The Pioneer (29-21) accounted for 14 hits, 10 stolen bases and took advantage of eight BSC errors to record the victory.

Tusculum senior pitcher John-Austin Shepard pitched six strong innings as he limited the Big Blues (9-33) to three hits, three unearned runs with no walks and eight strikeouts to even his season record at 5-5. The senior pitching trio of Billy Sivyer, Scott Simmons and T.J. Miller held Bluefield State scoreless for the final three innings. TC pitching recorded 15 strikeouts on the night, for the third most in a single-game in school history.

Rodriguez also scored three runs and posted a career-best three stolen bases, which are tied for the third-most ever by a Pioneer.

Tusculum junior Jalen Shuffler went 2-for-3 with three walks, two runs scored and three RBI, including his two-run double to spark a five-run, eighth inning to put the game out of reach.

Ricky Diaz led the Big Blues with his 2-for-3 effort at the plate.

The two teams will close out the season on Sunday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Pioneer Park.
