FOREST CITY, N.C. --- Heath Comerford came
through with a two-run double in the top of the 10th inning as
fifth-seeded Tusculum College defeated No. 6 seed Anderson
University 8-6 Friday afternoon in an elimination game of the 2014
Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Baseball Tournament.
The Pioneers (27-20) survive to advance to another elimination game
on Saturday at 3:45 p.m. against No. 4 seed Newberry College, who
upset top-seeded Catawba College on Friday. Anderson (19-32) is
eliminated from the tournament.
Tusculum rallied from behind on three separate occasions to stay alive in the double-elimination tournament, which is being held this week at McNair Field. TC also improved its record to 5-1 this season in extra-inning contests.
In the 10th inning with the score tied at 6-6, Chris Waylock led off with an infield hit. Waylock moved to second on a bunt and Jeremiah Tullidge was hit by a pitch to put two runners aboard. With two outs in the frame, Comerford stepped up and lined a double down the right field line to score Waylock and Tullidge for an 8-6 Tusculum lead.
TC relief pitcher T.J. Miller struck out the first two batters of the bottom of the 10th inning on six straight pitches. But the Trojans put together a two-out rally with back-to-back singles from Nathan Galliford and Brett Cash, and Jonathan Zalud drew a walk to load the bases. But Miller got out of the jam with a ground out from LJ Newman to end the game.
TC senior Billy Sivyer pitched four shutout innings to earn the victory to even his season record at 3-3. Miller pitched the 10th to record his second save of the year.
Comerford went 2-for-5 in the game with three RBI, including his team-leading 14th double of the season. Trey Drewery reached base five times with a pair of singles and three walks, while Waylock finished with two hits and two runs scored. Andrew Bowerman led all players scoring three runs with a hit and a walk.
Anderson finished the game with 13 hits, including three-hit performances by Cash and Newman.
The two teams combined for 29 runners left on base, including 13 by Tusculum and 16 left by Anderson.
The Tusculum win also snapped a five-game losing streak by the Pioneers.
Tusculum finished the game with four sacrifice bunts, which are tied for the second most in school history and one off the single-game record five posted against Milligan in 1997. TC has recorded 60 sacrifice bunts this year, which are three away from establishing a new team single-season record.
