Tusculum listed in final NCAA baseball statistics

INDIANAPOLIS --- The final edition of the 2013 NCAA Division II baseball statistics have been released and Tusculum is listed in nine team categories, while six Pioneers are mentioned individually.

The Pioneers led the South Atlantic Conference with 15 triples, which were 43rd most in the nation. Tusculum was second in the league in base on balls with 192 walks, which are 47th in the country. TC was also third in the conference in slugging percentage (.445 - 39th in NCAA II) and sacrifice bunts (45 - 44th in NCAA II).

TC recorded 34 home runs this season which are fourth-best in the SAC and 31st in the country. Tusculum also pounded out 99 doubles (6th in SAC/40th in NCAA II) and tallied 31 sacrifice flies (9th in SAC/23rd in NCAA II). The TC pitching staff accounted for 7.3 strikeouts per nine innings pitched (49th in NCAA II), while the team won-loss percentage of .647 was 47th in DII.

Junior first baseman Heath Comerford (Athens, Tenn.) ended the season tied for the conference lead with 20 doubles, which were 16th most in the country. He also finished third in the SAC and 37th in the land with his .625 slugging percentage.

Senior second baseman Matt Henriksen (Hingham, Mass.) ended his final collegiate campaign with a team-best 13 home runs which are second in the league and ninth most in the nation. His .622 slugging percentage for 2013 was also fourth in the conference and 42nd in NCAA II. Henriksen's home run tally is the seventh most in a year at Tusculum. He wraps up his career with 27 home runs, which are tied for the fifth most in school history. His seven-RBI performance moved him into sole possession of second place on the career RBI list with 147. In his 181 games, he finished second in doubles (52), third in runs scored (148), third in total bases (335), fifth in walks (91), sixth in hits (196), sixth in sacrifice bunts (18), sixth in fielding assists (345), seventh in hit by pitch (20), seventh in sacrifice flies (11) and seventh in at-bats (613).

For a second straight season, senior shortstop Tripper Crisson (Lincolnton, N.C.) led the league in sacrifice bunts with 14 (12th in NCAA II). In just his 107 games at Tusculum, Crisson will leave as the program's all-time leader with 34 sacrifice bunts, while his 328 fielding assists are the eighth most in school history.

Senior third baseman Cade Stallings (Knoxville, Tenn.) tallied six sacrifice flies, which are tied for second in the league and 26th in NCAA II. In his two seasons at Tusculum, Stallings finished with a .345 batting average, while recording 103 hits, including 27 doubles, 16 home runs and 97 RBI. In just 109 games (all starts), he was hit by a pitch on 24 occasions, the fourth most in TC history. His 13 sacrifice flies in a Pioneer uniform are the also fourth in the Pioneer record book.

Senior relief pitcher John-Austin Shepard (Haymarket, Va.) posted a program single-season record nine saves, which were tops in the conference and 19th in the nation.

Pitcher Taylor Rakes, a graduate student from Norcross, Ga., tied for third in the SAC with his 84 strikeouts, which were 44th in the country. Rakes ends his stellar career as the program's all-time leader in innings pitched (285). He also finished second in career strikeouts (209), second in starts (45), fourth in complete games and 10th in career earned run average (3.66).

The Pioneers ended the season with a 33-18 overall record for the program's 13th straight winning season and 11th consecutive 30-win campaign.
