Craig Goodman named NCBWA Pitcher of the Year

WILSON, N.C. --- Tusculum College senior Craig Goodman has been named the 2012 NCAA Division II Southeast Region Pitcher of the Year by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA).

TC junior third baseman Cade Stallings was named to the All-Region First Team, while senior outfielder Alexi Colon and sophomore relief pitcher John-Austin Shepard garnered All-Region honorable mention recognition.

Goodman, a right-hander from Clearwater, Fla., has accounted for one of the best seasons ever by a Tusculum pitcher. He has a 10-0 record in his 12 starts entering this year's NCAA Southeast Regional, while posting a 2.09 earned run average, which is the lowest in the South Atlantic Conference and fifth-best in school history.

The 2012 SAC Pitcher of the Year has recorded three complete games this season, while pitching in 86 innings where he has posted 80 strikeouts against 22 walks. The two-time All-SAC First Team selection is limiting the opposition to a .228 batting average and of the 73 hits he has allowed this season, only eight have been of the extra-base variety, including just one home run.

Goodman's 10 wins this year are tied for the third most in a TC single-season, while his 80 strikeouts are tied for the second most and eight shy of the school record of 88 posted by Mark Fraser in 1995. He has been named a Tino Martinez National Player of the Year semifinalist.

Stallings, a junior from Knoxville, Tenn., leads the Pioneers with his 63 RBI, which are currently 10th in the country and seventh most in school history. The 2012 All-SAC First Team standout is batting .373 with 15 doubles, 11 home runs, while scoring 63 runs, second most on the team and eighth in the nation.

Colon, native of Vineland, N.J., leads the nation in base on balls with a school and SAC single-season record 64 walks. Colon enters the NCAA postseason third all-time at Tusculum in career home runs (31), second in slugging percentage (.685) and walks (102). The two-time All-Region and All-Conference selection is batting .320 this season in his 54 starts with 11 doubles, three triples and 19 home runs (4th in NCAA II).

Shepard, a right-hander reliever from Haymarket, Va., leads the Pioneers with seven saves in his 18 relief appearances. The 2012 All-SAC First Team standout has a 4-2 record with a 2.83 ERA in his 28.2 innings of work. He has recorded 38 strikeouts with 13 walks as his seasonal save tally is one shy of a school record. His 10 career saves are tied for fifth most in school history.
