Pioneers, Falcons split baseball twinbill

MONTEVALLO, Ala. --- Tusculum College's Aaron Guinn recorded six hits on the day, including a pair of doubles as the Pioneers split a non-conference doubleheader over at the University of Montevallo Saturday at Kermit A. Johnson Stadium.

Tusculum (33-17) won the first game 7-4, while Montevallo (21-26) rallied with three runs in the bottom of the ninth en route to an 11-10 victory in the night-cap.

The two teams will close out the three-game weekend series with a 2 p.m. (EST) contest on Sunday.

Game 1: Tusculum 7, Montevallo 4 (Box Score)

Guinn went 4-for-4 and starter Craig Goodman pitched seven strong innings as the Pioneers defeated the Falcons 7-4 in the series opener.

Tusculum pounded out 11 hits in the victory, multi-hit efforts by Guinn (4-of-4), Alexi Colon (2-for-4) and Rolondo Bonner (2-for-5).

Goodman allowed six hits, two runs, one earned, walked two and recorded two strikeouts in his 100-pitch performance to improve his seasonal record to 8-4. Dylan Hochevar pitched the final two innings, allowing three this, two runs, one walk and two strikeouts.

Montevallo accounted for nine hits in the contest, including two hits apiece by Wil Fulmer and Heath Peterson.

Tusculum jumped out to a 6-0 advantage, plating three runs in the first, one in the four and two more in the sixth. In the opening frame, TC got run-scoring single by Bonner and a two-run base hit off the bat of Guinn to take a 3-0 advantage.

In the fourth, Bradley Mattox led off with a double and later scored on a RBI single by Colon to move out to a 4-0 lead. TC plated a pair of unearned runs in the sixth as Guinn led off with a double and scored thanks to a UM error. Sean Cotten drove in the other run with his infield single as TC had a six-run cushion.

The Falcons responded with two runs each in the sixth and eighth innings. In the sixth, Rosenberg posted one-out single. In the eighth frame, Headley came through with a two-run double to bring UM within a run at 6-4. TC got an insurance run in the ninth as Colon doubled to lead off the inning, Bonner came through with a two-out RBI single.

Game 2: Montevallo 11, Tusculum 10 (Box Score)

Montevallo rallied from behind on three separate occasions in the second game, including in the ninth as Scott Deason capped a three-run frame with his walk-off two-run single as the Falcons won 11-10 to gain a twin-bill split.

Tusculum out-hit Montevallo by an 18-11 margin, but TC committed two critical errors in a six-run, fifth inning for the home team.

Colon, Cody Coffman and Matt Henriksen each tallied three hits for the Pioneers, while UM's Andrew Hill went 3-for-5 with three runs scored.

Tusculum vaulted out to a 5-0 lead, scoring three runs in the first and two more in the third. In the first, Colon led off with a single, while Cotton, Coffman and Henriksen followed with back-to-back doubles to stake the visitors to a 3-0 lead. TC added two more tallies in the third thanks to consecutive RBI hits by Myles Illian and Payden Houser.

Senior starting pitcher Jason Gardner opened with four shut out innings as he scattered two hits, until the fifth as the Falcons send 11 batters to the plate in a six-run outburst to take a 6-5 lead.

Tusculum jumped back on top with three runs in the top of the seventh. Bonner connected on a two-out, pinch-hit single to tie the game. Pinch hitter Eric Conley put the Pioneers in the lead again with his two-out, two-run single as TC moved out to an 8-6 advantage.

That lead would last until the bottom of the eighth when Andrew Hill reached on a lead-off single and Chris Ross followed with a two-run blast to right field to knot the contest at 8-8.

In the top of the ninth, Tusculum plated two runs of its own to move out to a 10-8 lead. Guinn led off with a single, moved to second on Bonner's sacrifice bunt. After Houser was hit by a pitch for a second time in the contest, Nate Reid drove in Guinn with the go ahead run with his one-out single. Colon gave TC an insurance run with his two-out double to score Houser.

In the ninth, the Falcons drew a pair of walks to start the inning. Following a strikeout, Hill singled to drive in a run to cut the deficit to 10-9. On the play, Hill moved to second on the throw to put runners at the second and third with one out. Ross was intentionally walked to load the bases, but Deason stepped up and singled through the right side to bring home the tying and winning runs.

Reliever Edward Brandsema (1-1) picked up the victory as he allowed one hit in his 2/3 innings of work.
