Pioneers drop tri-match at Chattanooga

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The Tusculum University women's beach volleyball team fell in a Division I tri-match against Chattanooga and UT Martin on Saturday (Mar. 29).

Tusculum (4-10, 2-4 SAC) returns to conference action next weekend (Apr. 4-5), hosted by Carson-Newman. The Pioneers will face Emmanuel, Catawba, Wingate, and Erskine over the two-day event.

Match 1: UT Martin 4, Tusculum 1
The fifth flight scored the lone point for the Pioneers in the first-ever meeting against the Skyhawks.

Katie Murphy and Nyah Goss dropped the fourth flight in straight sets: 21-12, 21-13.

Kyla Oppenhuis and Landry Tea pulled off the comeback to reverse sweep the No. 5 UTM pair by scores of 19-21, 21-18, 15-13.

At the No. 3 slot, Ryann Gallagher and Morgan Willis won the first set 21-17, but fell 21-14, 15-8 in the final two frames.

Mia Johnson and Kassidy Mercado suffered a 21-13, 21-11 setback at No. 2 at the hands of a former teammate, Olivia O'Keefe.

The top flight of Brynn Smith and Hannah Marsh came up short 21-19, 18-21, 12-15 to another former teammate at TU, Riley Rushing.

Match 2: Chattanooga 5, Tusculum 0
The Mocs swept the Pioneers for the second time this season.

The flight finished in reverse order, all in straight sets.

Murphy and Sofia Richmond dropped an identical 21-13, 21-13 decision.

Oppenhuis and Tea moved up to the fourth slot and lost 21-13, 21-19.

Gallagher and Willis suffered a 21-12, 21-11 setback.

Johnson and Mercado fell 21-17, 21-9, while the top flight of Smith and Marsh were felled 21-14, 21-17.
