Tusculum splits Showdown finale

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The Tusculum University women's beach volleyball team split its final two matches at the Scenic City Showdown on Saturday (Apr. 6).

Tusculum (16-9) hosts rival Carson-Newman on Tuesday (Apr. 9) for a 10 a.m. doubleheader to close out the regular season.

Match 1: Chattanooga 4, Tusculum 1
The Mocs ended the Pioneers' four-match winning streak with the opening match of day two. Four of the five matchups needed a decisive third set.

At No. 4, Charlyn Miller and Katie McLamb were defeated 26-24, 21-16.

The 5's of Morgan Willis and Katie Murphy nearly withstood a comeback but were unable to hold off their opposites: 21-16, 9-21, 13-15.

Kyla Oppenhuis and Brynn Smith almost pulled off a come from behind victory in the third flight, but came up just short by scores of 17-21, 21014, 12-15.

Riley Rushing and Hannah Marsh dropped their No. 2 flight 21-15, 17-21, 5-15.

The lone point for TU came at the top flight with Morgan Browne and Olivia Browne. The twins reverse swept their opposites by scores of 20-22, 21-15, 16-14.

Match 2: Tusculum 5, Jacksonville State 0
The Pioneers made quick work of the Gamecocks in their event finale.

Miller and McLamb rebounded with a 21-14, 21-9 victory at No. 4.

Diana Bierwagen and Emily Venable took the win at the fifth flight 21-18, 21-7.

As the 3's, Oppenhuis and Smith notched a 21-9, 21-12 decision.

The Browne sisters finished off their perfect day with a 21-12, 21-13 result.

The only flight to go to a third set was the second. Rushing and McLamb survived the threat by scores of 21-3, 16-21, 15-9.
