Pioneers down two foes at Chattanooga

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The Tusculum University women's beach volleyball team beat rival Carson-Newman and won the rematch over Austin Peay, sweeping day one at the Scenic City Showdown, hosted by Chattanooga.

Tusculum (15-8) finishes out the Scenic City Showdown on Saturday (Apr. 6) against the hosting Mocs and Jacksonville State.

Match 1: Tusculum 4, Carson-Newman 1
Three flights needed a decisive third set, with TU winning all three.

Charlyn Miller and Katie McLamb got the scoring started at No. 4, tallying a 21-14, 19-21, 15-5 decision.

At No. 5, Diana Bierwagen and Emily Venable outlasted their opposites 22-20, 15-21, 17-15.

Carson-Newman's lone point came at the 3's, winning 21-18, 21-19 over Kyla Oppenhuis and Brynn Smith.

Olivia Browne and Morgan Browne took down the top flight of the Eagles in straight sets to clinch: 21-18, 21-12.

The 2's of Hannah Marsh and Riley Rushing finalized the victory with a comeback: 18-21, 21-18, 15-12.

Match 2: Tusculum 3, Austin Peay 2
The Pioneers avenged an early season loss to the Govs, starting the month perfect. Austin Peay tallied the first two points of the match before the Pioneers rallied for the win.

At No. 5, Morgan Willis and Katie Murphy dropped a 22-20, 21-14 result.

The 4's of Miller and McLamb were unable to hold off their opposites: 20-22, 22-20, 15-10.

Smith and Oppenhuis were the first Pioneers to record a win, taking the third flight with a come from behind victory of 19-21, 21-15, 15-10.

Rushing and Marsh tied the match with their result at No. 2: 21-16, 17-21, 16-14.

The Browne twins needed overtime to clinch the match at the top spot: 9-21, 21-17, 19-17.
