Tusculum opens season at Jacksonville Tournament

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. --- The Tusculum University beach volleyball team opened its 2023 campaign at Jacksonville University on Saturday (Feb. 25), taking on the College of Charleston and Palm Beach Atlantic.

Tusculum (0-2) continues its time at the Jacksonville Tournament on Sunday morning (Feb. 25). The Pioneers play the host Dolphins and Division II powerhouse Tampa at 8 and 10 a.m., respectively.

Match 1: College of Charleston 4, Tusculum 1
Emma Johnson and Hannah Marsh picked up their first win as a pairing in Marsh's collegiate debut.

The No. 3 flight edged out their opponents by narrow margins of 21-18, 21-19.

Top flight of Jordyn Anderson and Kyla Oppenhuis, both freshmen, dropped its first match via a 16-21, 14-21 scoring.

Kassidy Mercado and Morgan Pacione tallied a 21-15, 21-12 loss as the No. 2 pair.

Charlyn Miller and Katie McLamb teamed up for the first time, used as the No. 4 flight. They suffered the biggest deficit by scores of 21-14, 21-11.

Rounding out the contest was Landry Tea and Riley Rushing at No. 5. They forced overtime in the first set, but fell 22-20, 21-18.

Match 2: Palm Beach Atlantic 4, Tusculum 1
Johnson and Marsh continued their perfect start to the season, needing three sets to pull off the victory.

The No. 3 duo won 21-17, 16-21, 15-10.

Moving up to the top flight, Mercado and Pacione recorded a 21-6, 21-11 showing.

Anderson and Oppenhuis moved down to the second flight and were swept by identical scores of 21-18, 21-18.

Miller and McLamb stayed put as the No. 4 pair, pushing their PBA foes to a decisive third set, falling 21-23, 21-14, 7-15.

Rushing and Tea wrapped up the scoring with a 21-17, 21-13 performance.

In an exhibition sixth flight, Diana Bierwagen and Katie Murphy made their first appearance as a pairing. The scores were 21-15, 21-8 in the Sailfish favor.
