Davis picks up 50th career win at AVCA event

TAVARES, Fla. --- Senior Haley Davis broke through the 50-win plateau on day two of the AVCA Small College Beach Championship, extending her program record career total. The Tusculum University beach volleyball team split its two outings, falling to archrival Carson-Newman and sweeping Eckerd.

No. 8 seeded Tusculum (20-11) will wrap up 2022 in the Bronze Playoff A bracket, competing against Erskine and Florida Southern at 10 a.m. and noon, respectively. The Pioneers have beaten both the Flying Fleet and Mocs already in the month of April.

Match 1: Carson-Newman 3, Tusculum 2
The Pioneers had already beaten the Eagles twice this season and stood 9-1 in the series history, but Carson-Newman came away as the victor in the postseason meeting.

The No. 2 flight of Charlyn Miller and Haley Davis were the first to count with their 21-11, 21-10 domination. The victory was Davis' 50th as a Pioneer, the first in program history to reach the milestone.

The Eagles got on the board with a win at No. 3 over Britney Shawel and Landry Tea, 21-14, 21-17.

Katie McLamb and Olivia Knutson narrowly dropped their fourth flight matchup, 21-19, 21-18.

Carson-Newman clinched the win at the top slot. Olivia O'Keefe and Emma Johnson were on the wrong side of a 21-16, 21-17 decision for Tusculum.

Skyellar Hall and Emily Lawless outlasted their No. 5 foes over a three-set, overtime slugfest: 21-16, 15-21, 17-15.

Match 2: Tusculum 5, Eckerd 0
Unable to field an entire lineup, Eckerd gifted the Pioneers a 2-0 advantage before the match truly began. The 4's (McLamb/Knutson) and 5's (Hall/Lawless) are credited with the wins by forfeit.

Shawel and Tea were the first to finish with identical 21-10, 21-10 set scores.

O'Keefe and Johnson needed three sets to come away with their victory: 21-19, 18-21, 15-11.

Davis and Miller tallied a 21-9, 21-13 winning decision to close out the challenge match.
