Tusculum sweeps Saturday in sand

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- The Tusculum University beach volleyball closed out its home round robin with a pair of sweeps on Saturday (Feb. 26). The Pioneers (7-1) blanked both Carson-Newman and Eastern Kentucky.

Tusculum travels to Gulf Shores, Alabama next weekend (Mar. 4-5) for the SHC Badger Classic. The Pioneers are scheduled to face New Orleans, Mobile, Spring Hill, William Carey, and Berry in the Heart of Dixie.

Match 1: Tusculum 5, Carson-Newman 0
Bouncing back from their first loss of the season, the Pioneers trounced the rival Eagles. TU now leads the series over Carson-Newman 8-1.

The order of finish was 4,6,5,1,3,2 and no pair needed a deciding third set.

The freshmen pair of Katie McLamb and Olivia Knutson have won their first six collegiate matches, including their first match against the rival. The No. 4 partners eased through the 21-10, 21-13 outing.

In the No. 6 flight, Destiny Ramsey and Morgan Pacione tallied a 21-16, 21-12 exhibition showing.

Arizona Webb and Diana Bierwagen are now 2-0 in the fifth slot after a 21-17, 21-12 victory of their Jefferson City opponent.

Olivia O'Keefe and Charlyn Miller responded well after the pair's first loss of the season in the top flight. The duo notched a 21-16, 21-14 decision to rebound.

Britney Shawel and Landry Tea continued their hot streak in the No. 3 flight, cruising to a 21-14, 21-9 victory.

The final pair to finish was Emma Johnson and Haley Davis. After squeaking out a 21-18 set one win, the duo dominated the final frame (21-8) to close out the match over the Eagles.

Match 2: Tusculum 5, Eastern Kentucky 0
The Pioneers earned their second sweep of the rainy day, taking down the Division I Colonels.

O'Keefe and Miller needed overtime in the first set (23-21) before closing out their day with a 21-13 second frame.

The winningest pair in program history are now 8-0 to start 2022. Johnson and Davis needed three sets in the second slot to notch their win: 21-18, 20-22, 15-12.

Shawel and Tea upped their record to 7-1 after edging out their EKU counterparts in a three-set outcome: 19-21, 21-10, 15-13.

The freshman fourth flight of McLamb and Knutson continued their perfect start (7-0) behind a 21-14, 21-11 win.

Emily Lawless and Skyellar Hall made their first appearance of the day in the No. 5 flight, collecting a 21-11, 21-12 decision.

Bumped down to the exhibition slot, Bierwagen and Webb scored their second victory of the day, 21-12, 21-9.
