MT. PLEASANT, S.C. --- The Tusculum University beach volleyball team wrapped up the final day of 2021 College of Charleston Beach Classic with a pair of losses against Division I opponents, No. 19 Stetson and the hosting Cougars.
Tusculum (3-4) has just under two weeks to prepare for the three-day AVCA Small College Beach Championship in Tavares, Florida, taking place from April 16-18.
Match 1: No. 19 Stetson 5, Tusculum 0
The pairings finished in reverse order (6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1) and competed in two waves (4, 5, 6 and 1, 2, 3).
In the sixth/exhibition flight, Gabby Rambo and Destiny Ramsey teamed up for the second time this season, but earned just eight points (21-3, 21-5).
Mabry Ward and Arizona Webb made their pairing debut in the No. 5 slot, dropping a 21-5, 21-9 showing. Webb was competing in her first countable match of the season, but had played in several exhibitions.
Skyellar Hall and Emily Lawless continued their season-long partnership, but fell 21-12, 21-6 in the No. 4 flight.
Britney Shawel and Diana Bierwagen, as the consistent third pair, lost by identical 21-9, 21-9 set scores.
The freshmen duo of Olivia O'Keefe and Charlyn Miller totaled a 21-7, 21-10 decision.
Haley Davis and Emma Johnson participated in the most-contested matchup against the Hatters, reaching double-figures in both frames (21-10, 21-12).
Match 2: College of Charleston 5, Tusculum 0
The pairings finished in near-reverse order (5, 6, 4, 3, 2, 1) and competed in the two waves. Out of 13 sets played against the Cougars, 12 hit double-digits.
Ward and Emily Venable reunited at No. 5, but lost a 21-12, 21-10 outing.
Madalyn Bass and Webb took on the exhibition pair from CofC and tallied a 21-13, 21-11 loss.
Hall and Lawless were the lone Pioneer duo to extend their matchup to three sets on the weekend and battled to a 13-21, 21-17, 7-15 decision. The juniors are now the only TU pair with a winning record together in 2021 (4-3).
The 3's (Shawel and Bierwagen) fell 21-16, 21-13 and the O'Keefe/Miller coupling lost 21-13, 21-17.
The top flight of Davis and Johnson improved its scoring in the second match of the day with a 21-14, 21-12 total.
