FORT WAYNE, Ind. --- The Tusculum University women's beach volleyball team recorded wins over Carson-Newman and Stevenson University to go 2-0 on the final day of the Principia Beach Bash.
The Pioneers improved to 3-1 on the young season as TU opened with a 4-1 victory over Carson-Newman and followed with a gutty 3-2 win over Stevenson.
Tusculum 4, Carson-Newman 1
Three of Tusculum's four points came in straight sets as the Pioneers defeated in-state foe Carson-Newman 4-1. The Pioneers won at the top three flights including at the No.3 tandem as Gabby Gray / Skyellar Hall posted a three-set win over C-N's Aryana Fazelnia and Kelly Hughes (21-14, 17-21, 15-13).
TU's Melissa Mazur and Lana Vujosevic defeated the C-N duo of Summer Coulter and Abby Struewing 21-11, 21-10 which proved to be the third and deciding point for the Pioneers. Haley Davis and Marissa Morgan won their No. 2 match-up, 21-16, 21-15, while Danika Chaney and Catherine Clingan made quick work at the fifth flight, winning 21-13, 21-9.
Tusculum 3, Stevenson 2
Tusculum and Stevenson slugged it out in a five-game thriller as the Pioneers prevailed 3-2 to close out the PC Beach Bash and a solid beginning to the beach volleyball era at Tusculum University.
TU claimed straight set wins at the first, second and fourth flights, while the Mustangs (2-2) were victorious at the third and fifth flights.
The Pioneers return to action in two weeks as they make the trek to Clarksville, Tennessee for the Governor's Challenge as TU will face host Austin Peay (Mar. 15), along with Southern Mississippi (Mar. 16) and Jacksonville State (Mar. 16).
