Simmons, Patterson named Zaxby's Athletes of the Week

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Tusculum quarterback Tre Simmons and goalkeeper Grayson Patterson have been named the Zaxby's Athletes of the Week.

Simmons, a sophomore from Tampa, Florida, accounted for three touchdowns in leading the Pioneers to a 34-6 South Atlantic Conference win over Carson-Newman. He recorded 239 total offensive yards as he passed for two touchdowns and rushed for another.

He finished the game with 89 rushing yards and went 17-for-28 for 150 passing yards as Tusculum improved to 5-1 for its best start to a season since 2003. He got the scoring started with his career-long 71-yard touchdown run in the opening quarter. It was the 10th longest run from scrimmage in program history.

Patterson, a junior from Maryville, Tennessee, made 19 saves in two matches as the Pioneers played to draws with Anderson (2-2) and Limestone (0-0).

Patterson had eight saves against Anderson, including seven in the first half, and had a career-high 11 stops at Limestone in a match where the Pioneers were outshot by a 16-1 margin. Patterson's shutout against Limestone was her fourth of the season and extended Tusculum's unbeaten streak to four matches (2-0-2).

The Tusculum University Athlete of the Week Award is sponsored by Zaxby's, located at 3280 Andrew Johnson Highway in Greeneville. The Zaxby's Athlete of the Week Award honors one male and one female athlete each week from an in-season sport.
