Furr, Long named Zaxby's Athletes of the Week

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Tusculum University outfielder Fuzzy Furr and guard Mia Long have been named the Zaxby's Athletes of the Week.

Long was named Most Valuable Player of the Pilot/Flying J South Atlantic Conference Women's Basketball Championship after scoring a game-high 22 points as the Pioneers rallied for a 61-49 win over Anderson in the title game on Sunday. In three games, Long averaged 15.3 points, 4.7 rebounds, 6.0 assists and 4.3 steals per game to lead the Pioneers to their first SAC tournament title since 2011.

In Wednesday's quarterfinal against Wingate, Long tallied 13 points, eight assists and eight steals in an 82-40 victory. The Ann Arbor, Michigan native followed with 11 points, eight rebounds and seven assists to help the Pioneers to an 81-73 win over Carson-Newman in Saturday's semifinals. In the championship game, Long shot 7-for-15 from the field and 6-for-9 from the foul line, with five rebounds and four steals while playing all 40 minutes for the second time in 24 hours. Against Anderson, Long broke the Tusculum single-season record for steals with 112, surpassing the old mark of 109 set by Mitzi Alexander during the 1991-92 season.

Long, who was voted first-team All-SAC by the conference's head coaches on Thursday, ranks ninth in the league in scoring at 14.4 points per game and in steals at 3.61 per game. She has scored in double figures in 13 of the Pioneers' last 14 games and has at least one steal in all but one of the Pioneers' 31 games this season.

Furr, a junior from Marietta, Georgia, batted .455 on the week going 5-for-11 with two doubles and four RBI as the Pioneers went a perfect 4-0 on the week in South Atlantic Conference play. In Saturday's series opener at Coker, Furr went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two runs scored and three RBI in TU's 17-2 rout of the Cobras. He followed with a 1-for-3 effort in game two of the series while scoring two runs. He contributed a pair of singles in the Pioneers' 5-3 win over Coker where he drove in an insurance run in the seventh inning in Tusculum's 5-3 victory in the series finale.

Furr is batting .316 this season where he has one home run, 19 RBI and has five stolen bases.

The Tusculum University Athlete of the Week Award is sponsored by Zaxby's, located at 3280 Andrew Johnson Highway in Greeneville.  The Zaxby's Athlete of the Week Award honors one male and one female athlete each week from an in-season sport.
