
GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Tusculum baseball outfielder Jarel McDade and lacrosse midfielder Madison Malone have been named the Bojangles Athletes of the Week.
McDade, a junior from Magnolia, Texas, batted .583 with three home runs and nine RBI to lead the Pioneers to a 2-2 record last week. The Tyler College transfer went 7-of-12 at the plate and totaled 10 runs, four walks, three stolen bases and was hit by a pitch four times while striking out only once in his 20 plate appearances.
McDade opened the week by going 2-for-2 with a home run, two RBI and four runs scored in Tusculum's 13-2 win over Bluefield State. He also posted a walk, was hit by a pitch and recorded two stolen bases. He followed that going 3-for-4 with five RBI including a grand slam in the series opener at Coker.
He scored four runs for a second straight game, walked twice and stole a base. In went hitless in game two of the Coker series, but got on base three times with a walk and was hit by a pitch twice. In the series finale, McDade went 2-for-3 including a two-run homer as he homered in three of his four games during the week.
Malone scored eight goals and had four assists for 12 points as the Pioneers split a pair of South Atlantic Conference matches last week. Malone had three goals and three assists as Tusculum defeated Lincoln Memorial 14-8 on the road on Wednesday for its fourth straight win, then tied her career high with five goals and had an assist in a 17-14 loss at home to Wingate on Saturday. Malone added four ground balls, three draw controls and a caused turnover in the two games, while scoring on eight of her 10 shots on goal.
For the season, the senior from Maple Grove, Minnesota ranks second on the Pioneers with 34 points, on 17 goals and a team-high 17 assists. She is the South Atlantic Conference career leader in assists with 144, which ranks third among active Division II players. Malone, a two-time first-team All-SAC selection, is also the program career leader in points with 227, ground balls with 169, draw controls with 212 and caused turnovers with 102, while scoring at least one point in 58 consecutive matches dating to her freshman season.
