GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Tusculum sprinter Widchard Guervil and pitcher Taylor Plemons have been named the Bojangles Athletes of the Week. Guervil earns his fifth Bojangles honors this spring, while Plemons garners her inaugural weekly accolade of the season.
Guervil finished fourth in the men's 60-meter dash at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field National Championship last weekend in Pittsburg, Kansas.
Guervil ran 6.70 seconds in the finals to earn All-America honors in the program's inaugural season. He finished behind Olympic medalist Mobolade Ajomale of the Academy of Art, who ran 6.60 seconds to earn his third straight 60-meter championship.
Guervil, the South Atlantic Conference champion in the 60 meters, was the only freshman competing in the event. He qualified for the finals by winning his heat and placing third overall in preliminaries with a time of 6.67 seconds on Friday.
With the five points Guervil earned in the event, Tusculum finished tied for 33rd in the final team standings. A total of 57 schools had at least one point among the 81 that competed in the men's championship, with the Pioneers placing second among the six SAC schools that had at least one athlete in the meet.
Plemons went 2-0 with a save in three appearances during last weekend's Pioneer Classic, helping Tusculum win four out of five games in a span of 34 hours. The junior right-hander from Knoxville, Tennessee threw five-hit shutouts on consecutive days against Belmont Abbey and Goldey-Beacom, and finished the weekend with two earned runs allowed in 15 innings of work.
In her first appearance, Plemons pitched three innings and struck out four while earning her first career save in a 9-5 win over Belmont Abbey in game one of a doubleheader with the Crusaders on Friday. In the second game, Plemons struck out three and scattered five hits as the Pioneers claimed a 10-0 victory in six innings. On Saturday, Plemons returned to the circle against Goldey-Beacom and held the Lightning to five hits while striking out four in an 8-0 victory.
The victories boosted Plemons' record to 5-4 and lowered her earned run average to 3.95 in 13 appearances (10 starts). In 55 innings of work this season, Plemons has struck out 34 and tossed six complete games and three shutouts.
The Tusculum College Athlete of the Week Award is sponsored by Bojangles, located at 3240 Andrew Johnson Highway in Greeneville. The Bojangles Athlete of the Week Award honors one male and one female athlete each week from an in-season sport.
