SUMTER, S.C. --- Freshman Ylva Frafjord Landa advanced to the round of 32 in singles and also earned a doubles win to lead Tusculum University's women's tennis team on day one of the ITA Division II Southeast Regional at the Palmetto Tennis Center on Friday.
Tusculum advanced both of its doubles teams out of the round of 64, as Landa teamed with Leonie Floeth for an 8-5 win over Emma Bentz and Luize Valtere of Erskine and Paulina Loretz partnered with Tabitha Howe for a 9-8 (7-5) victory over Jessica Binzari and Sydnee Foster of Coker.
Landa, who received a first-round bye in singles, rallied from a set down to defeat Tilde Howeler of Barton in her round of 64 match by a 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 score. Landa will face Nadja Meier of Flagler in her third-round match on Saturday at 4 p.m.
Three of the four Pioneers who played opening-round matches earned victories, led by Paulina Loretz who saved four match points in a 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 comeback win against Simone Mercier of Young Harris. Loretz would fall 6-3, 6-3 to Anna Greer of Anderson in the round of 64.
Also earning opening-round wins were Floeth, who beat Rupal Kharb of Erskine 6-1, 6-3, and Valentina Loretz who was a 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 winner over Camila Molina Barranco of Limestone. Floeth and Loretz would each fall in straight sets in the round of 64, and will play in the consolation bracket along with Paulina Loretz and Howe on Saturday.
In the doubles bracket, Landa and Floeth will square off with Annika Hakovirta and Suzuka Sambyakugari of Wingate at 8 a.m. Saturday, while Paulina Loretz and Howe will face Ariana Jativa and Hanna Vasconez of Erskine at 9 a.m. The winners will advance to the round of 16 later Saturday morning.
