16th-ranked Pioneers earn outright SAC Championship with 7-0 win over Catawba

GREENSBORO, N.C. --- The Tusculum University women's tennis team locked up the South Atlantic Conference championship with a 7-0 win over Catawba College Saturday at Barber Park.

The 16th-ranked Pioneers (15-2, 10-0 SAC) won their 12th consecutive match and went undefeated in conference play for the first time since 2009. Tusculum entered the day assured of the top seed in the SAC Championship tournament and no worse that a share of its first title since 2010, then swept Catawba (12-8, 4-6 SAC) to take the championship outright.

Tusculum will turn around and host Catawba in the quarterfinal round of the SAC Championship tournament on Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Nichols Tennis Complex. The four quarterfinal winners will play in the semifinal round on Thursday at the Rock Hill Tennis Center, with the championship match scheduled for Friday at noon.

In doubles, the 25th-ranked team of Annie McCullough and Caitlin McCullough finished off an undefeated SAC schedule with a 6-4 win over Erisa Onchi and Carolina Correia at flight one. The 20th-ranked team of Julia Lopez and Africa Mota beat Sophie Hirsch and Una Pandurevic 7-6 (7-3) at flight two, and Emilie Hansen teamed with Brittani Brooks for a 6-2 win over Lauren Laughton and Olivia Wooldridge at flight three.

In singles, 46th-ranked Annie McCullough closed the SAC season at 10-0 with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Onchi at flight one, Caitlin McCullough beat Hirsch 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 at flight two and Hansen was a 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 winner over Pandurevic at flight three.

Tusculum won in straight sets in the other three singles matches, as Lopez beat Wooldridge 6-2, 6-2 at flight four, Martina Marras defeated Laughton 7-5, 6-3 at flight five and Mota downed Emily Corcoran 6-0, 6-1 at flight six.
