GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Tusculum University earned its second consecutive shutout victory with a 2-0 win over Shaw University in non-conference women's soccer action Wednesday evening at Pioneer Field.
Yvette Raaijen scored on a penalty kick in the first half and Tina Haig added an insurance goal in the second half for the Pioneers (5-6-0), who received three saves from Danielle Breen in the win over the Bears (4-6-0), who entered the contest with three straight victories.
Raaijen's goal in the 29th minute gave Tusculum a 1-0 lead, and Haig added a goal in the 69th minute as the Pioneers finished with a 12-8 edge in shots over the Bears.
Tusculum had the first shot of the match in the ninth minute, but a shot to the near post by Haig was stopped by Shaw keeper Caylie Hartman. Breen made her first save in the 14th minute as she easily collected a free kick from 40 yards out by the Bears' Andrea Licea.
With 16:40 left in the half, a foul in the box by the Bears led to the Pioneers earning a penalty kick. Raaijen stepped up and drilled home her second penalty-kick goal of the year and the third of her career for a 1-0 Tusculum lead.
Tusculum carried the 1-0 lead into the second half, with Shaw's best chance coming 6 1/2 minutes into the half as a shot by Jasa Curry was slowed by the defense before being grabbed by Breen.
Haig gave the Pioneers a 2-0 lead with 21:16 left in the match as she took a through pass from Brianna Garcia down the right side, and beat Hartman across to the far post for her team-high third goal of the season.
Shaw's last shot attempt came in the final minute, but Breen made a routine stop on a desperation shot from Shaw's Ana Schardong to preserve her second straight shutout.
Tusculum finished the match with a 6-1 edge in corner kicks, while being flagged seven times for offsides. The Pioneers were also called for 19 fouls to 16 by the Bears in the physical match, which included four yellow cards.
Hartman ended the day with three saves for the Bears, who outshot the Pioneers 7-6 in the second half but could not avoid being shut out after averaging nearly four goals a game over their last three victories.
The Pioneers will return to South Atlantic Conference action on Sunday against Wingate, starting at 2 p.m. at Pioneer Field.
