Murrell falls in playoff, Pioneers finish fourth at Myrtle Beach Intercollegiate

OCEAN ISLE BEACH, N.C. --- Tusculum University's Cydney Murrell finished in a three-way tie for first place but lost on the second playoff hole following the final round of the 2018 Myrtle Beach Intercollegiate.  The two-day, 36-hole tournament was held at the par-72, 5,937-yard Panthers Run Course at the Ocean Ridge Plantation.

Newberry shot a tournament-best 299 in the final round to finish with a team total of 606 to win the title by two shots over first-round leader and co-host Lenoir-Rhyne (609).

Tusculum finished tied for fourth place at 622 despite shooting 308 on Tuesday, a six-shot improvement from Monday's opening round 314.

Murrell shot 75 in the final round to finish with a 36-hole score of 147, matching the total by Lise Malherbe (76-71=147) of co-host Lincoln Memorial and Newberry's Johana Lunackova (75-72=147).  Lunackova won the playoff on the second hole to claim the individual medal while Murrell and Lise Malherbe tied for runner-up honors.  Tyler Dawson of Converse finished fourth with 76-72=148, while Chowan's Inecia Rolle finished fifth with 76-74=150 to round out the All-Tournament Team.

Converse finished third in the team competition with 314-301=615 while Tusculum and LMU tied for fourth place.  Queens University of Charlotte was sixth with 632, followed by Mount Olive (637), Barton (644), Belmont Abbey (651), Emmanuel (687), Chowan (688) and Sandhills (703) to complete the team scoring.

Tusculum senior Katie Tomassoni finished with a two-over par 74 in a round that included six bogeys to go along with nine pars, two birdies and an eagle.  She tied for 16th place overall with her two-day score of 81-74=155.

TU rookie Julia Johansson also finished 16th as she carded 77-78=155 while fellow freshman Olivia Cunningham finished 39th with 84-81=165.  Tusculum senior Taylor White rounded out the scoring for the Pioneers with 89-83=172 to finish 49th.

The Pioneers return to action next week (Oct. 8-9) at the Patsy Rendleman Invitational in Salisbury, North Carolina.
