Pioneers upset No. 3 Nebraska to open Columbia Saints 300 Invite

CHESTERFIELD, Mo. --- The Tusculum University women's bowling team posted a 3-2 record including an upset of the third-ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers in day one action of the Columbia Saints 300 Invitational. The three-day, 19-team tournament is being held at the Bowlero Lanes and hosted by Maryville University.

The Pioneers got off to a slow start in its inaugural match against Spalding University but Tusculum made a late push to pick up the 923-826 victory. TU lost 957-890 to Kentucky Wesleyan in its second match of the day of the Baker 5-Game format.

Tusculum faced off against Nebraska in the third match of the day and the Pioneers defeated the Huskers 1014-959 for their biggest win over a ranked opponent, surpassing last weekend's triumph over No. 7 North Carolina A&T.  The pin-tally was its second largest Baker score of the year as Tusculum notched its seven victory over a ranked opponent in its inaugural campaign.

The Pioneers next battled Drury all the way to the end as Tusculum hung on by the slimmest of margins, winning by a pair of pins, 909-907.  TU was looking to go 4-1 for a second straight Friday, but lost 930-895 to Lewis (Ill.) University.

Tusculum (34-35) is 10th in the tournament field with 4,631 total pins.  McKendree, the No. 1 team in the country, leads the qualifying with 5,135 points, ahead of second place Arkansas State (4,976).

The Pioneers will play four traditional scoring matches on Saturday with three of those contest coming against nationally-ranked teams including top-ranked McKendree, No. 12 Central Missouri and No. 15 Maryville. TU will also face Upper Iowa to wrap up play before Sunday's bracket round.
